The overall consensus, though, was that this would be a spectacular waste of energy and lead to all sorts of issues with spammers stealing CPU etc, etc. The idea lived on, though becoming ... bitcoin!

So, back in about 2000, several people had proposals for proof-of-work systems for delivering email, which would have amounted to pretty much this. To send an email to someone new, you'd have to do a difficult calculation.

Or, especially if you were on a motorcycle, you'd jot down a list of turns on a bit of paper and put it somewhere you could see it. And unlike GPS directions, unless you knew an area really well you'd optimize for the least number of turns rather than the fastest or shortest route.

There was a nice little gimmick where people would pay their company taxes on credit cards with points schemes and get a pleasant little tax-free kickback in gift cards and stuff but yeah it seems like a sensible loophole to close.
