book.lexicon.community proposal by nperez0111 · Pull Request #229 · nperez0111/bookhive
This is a proposal for the specific community.lexicon.book.* lexicons. It is based on the following articles: https://nick-the-sick.pckt.blog/road-to-a-book-lexicon-part-1-t2eyqge https://nick-the...

This is an age old tension in DB design: normalized vs de-normalized and the PDS should skew heavily towards de-normalized in my opinion. So that records are interpretable on their own. + would require resolve the rating system for each rating

Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 19/09/2026
I like the granularity of how this is specified and get why you have split this up but one thing is that ideally from a rating record alone I should be able to interpret the system. If it links out to a 3rd party and that account goes offline you’ve killed how to interpret the rating for everyone

Yea, our editor is pretty Notion-like we have a way for making your own content types and embeds are a highly requested one. It actually wouldn’t be that hard to make a fork of docs that adds this embed feature. La Suite has specifically been asking us for this embed feature but we’ve been busy

Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 19/09/2026
LA Suite coop isn’t related to the organization that makes the project. The coop just deploys the software. I can connect you with the people who make the software. Though they are much more interested in Governments using this

Oh very cool, I work with the team that builds this. I can make any connections you need here. They use my rich text editor as the base for the editor in their poorly named Docs project

Oh, cool that might be the way to try it out. Thanks!

I'm waiting for more people to leverage the fact that you can legally just tack on your own extra fields onto a lexicon so that you have the best of both worlds. Inter-op where it matters and a little extra for when you need it.

By adding to your open source project rather than differentiating it with another product, you are offering the full value to someone and feel wronged when they don't reward you for it, but the reality is that they only ever needed the one thing - the package manager.
010
Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 13/09/2026
I think what is happening with PNPM is similar to what happened with Redis. Most people only ever use Redis as a KV cache, and then when they decided to change license, everyone freaked out because they rightly only need 1% of what Redis does.
140
Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 12/09/2026
Yea, my take is that pnpm is a good default of what NPM is supposed to do. And if NPM were to uptake its core ideas then I think it would be alright for pnpm to evolve to something different.

Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 11/09/2026

Keeping an eye on it! Yea I don’t envy their position, but it did dissolve pretty quickly

Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 09/09/2026
I’m not mad at pnpm for throwing its hat in the ring for this. But I am mad that node and NPM couldn’t do better as the defaults
030
Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 09/09/2026
Yea I think corepack was too little to late and now everyone needs both a runtime and pm manager. It’s a crazy state that we are in that it matters which version of the thing you use to install deps with. But here we are. Nobody stepped up for a long time and now there are too many of them

Nick The Sick @nickthesick.com · 09/09/2026
People have been hating on bun (even before the rewrite), but I really think that go and rust had it right to have the language/compiler/runtime/package manager all in one system. I think there are a lot of things that could be cool to unlock if you let the runtime also understand packages

A teenagers first hello world, or Minecraft mod tweaks was never representative of the job, it was getting used to the mindset: I can change anything, ownership. This has not been lost, I feel like it is easier than ever to just go: “yea can you modify this to do that”

What they would learn and what we learned would be different. It’s a similar argument to when high level languages came out, no one writes assembly anymore, everyone used to. Also me saying that it was always pay to play is that you’d need the time, freedom and drive to do it. So, nerds.

I unfortunately think that we are in this weird time where, for boomers, every year got better. And for us, every year gets worse. It’s really just things reverting back to the unfortunate mean that it always was.

Like we lived in a strange time where a guy with a laptop could out perform a hundred people. But that never really existed any other time in history. This is sort of going to be like the whole, “well in the 1950s a man with a high school degree earned enough to support a wife and 2.5 kids”

AI coding is the future, the cat is out of the bag and we can’t put it back in. And, yes, it is going to be “pay to win” but, it also sort of always had been?

Don't worry guys, Part 2 is here: Houston, we've got a book & review lexicon! I don't think it is in it's final shape just yet, but I believe it to be a strong proposal, and well justified if I may say so, myself 😌
