not once but TWICE @mckinneykelsey.sky.social told me to buy this cute folding step-stool table thing and i knew she was correct and it was ON SALE and well now my porch drinks dream (foldable bench foldable table) is real
a shot of a three season glassed in porch, showing an old wooden theatre bench love seat, thrust in a corner next to a brand new orange folding step stool table thing, with a red door and a single bike wheel visible on opposite sides of the space. it’s a very modern meets vintage look, and readers should know the poster’s husband and cohost of weekly summer porch drinks cocktail parties didn’t like this idea and didn’t approve it so stay tuned for results gang.

here’s that ‘better’ bathroom (tub not original, walls not original, tile not original, hole in wall to outside of the home, holes throughout the space, cold and poorly ventilated, black mold, etc)

kicker really nails it (tldr, a single family home on a wealthy cul de sac is being torn down and turned into a six story complex, neighbors are going to sue the developer if it gets approval)
screenshot of a black and white text block

‘That 9 Wyman’s neighbors have little say in what gets built there is exactly the point of the new zoning rules, said Justin Saif, cochair of the local pro-housing group A Better Cambridge. Cambridge’s affluent and eclectic culture means that a place known for growth and innovation simultaneously has a rich history that people want to protect. Many are willing to spend money to derail development they don’t like — a significant reason why the city has fallen so far short of its ambitious housing goals.

At a certain point, the fight over where and how to build housing becomes a question of values, he said.

“The question has always been, what’s more important?” Saif said. “The character of our neighborhoods or building the homes we need?”’

real ones know that trina's starlite lounge is the best bar around (it me i'm real)
screenshot of a newsletter text reading 'Why do you think Trina's Starlite Lounge is worth the schlep for someone in, say, Dorchester or Milton?

It's such a neighborhood spot, but I do think that people should come from farther away. The thing that we love about Trina's is that juxtaposition between low-brow — really simple, easy hot dogs — and then higher-brow, super fun cocktails. Not that the cocktails are like high brow; I think the one that I drank last time I was there had Yoo-hoo in it! I don't think there are that many of these mid-price neighborhoody spots anymore. Not as many as we'd like to see. So something about Trina's just has that magic.'

a professor tracked media employment in seattle a decade apart — and found that the relatively stable numbers were mostly related to gains in public media employment (summary via @markcoddington.bsky.social) www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
We’re closing in on two decades since calls to reorient American journalism around a more nonprofit and publicly based funding model started to become widespread. And a shift has certainly taken place since then, as a glance at the hundreds of nonprofit news organizations that have sprung up would indicate. But has that funding shift been able to do much to offset the hemorrhage of jobs from commercial news organizations during that time? And have they actually produced a meaningful change in the historic commercial orientation of journalism in the U.S.?

Powers’ new study suggests that the answers to those questions may actually be yes. Powers, a professor at the University of Washington, examined the makeup of newsroom employment in one U.S. city, Seattle. He built a comprehensive database of all full-time local journalists in the city in 2015, then updated it 10 years later. He classified those journalists in two related ways. The first was by ownership — public, nonprofit, private (owned by individuals, families, or small groups of investors), and market (publicly traded, or owned by private equity or hedge funds). The second was by funding — market, philanthropic, or government. We’re closing in on two decades since calls to reorient American journalism around a more nonprofit and publicly based funding model started to become widespread. The first was by ownership — public, nonprofit, private (owned by individuals, families, or small groups of investors), and market (publicly traded, or owned by private equity or hedge funds). The second was by funding — market, philanthropic, or government. In fact, the share of philanthropically funded journalism positions across the city doubled from 17.2% in 2015 to 35.3% in 2025. Taken together, Powers concluded that the expansion of public media and the increased philanthropic funding of newsroom positions “have sharply reduced the number of newsroom jobs that would have otherwise been lost during the past decade. They have also made segments of the journalism job market increasingly reliant on non-commercial support.” Powers acknowledged that these changes aren’t a panacea, and the local job market for journalists is still in structural decline. “These actions do, however, suggest that the rate and nature of this change is not inevitable,” he noted. “If politicians, philanthropists, and citizens wish to act to address the situation further, options exist for doing so.”

“✨I have always been a bit embarrassed how much my work defines me, or that when I meet someone at a party I ask them, not because I don’t know what else to say but because I’m actually curious, “what do you do?” But like, it’s interesting. pilot. princess. trash collector. is proving that to be so. Host Nick Andersen asks people three questions: what is the first job you wanted to do? What do you do now? What happened? I love following this trajectory but that’s not the only reason I’m excited about this show. Nick is one of the guys behind Ministry of Ideas and Hub & Spoke. He cares about exceptional storytelling and sound. Episode one, where Nick answers the questions himself, combines both of those things gorgeously. It’s not about just the answers to these questions. It’s about how we tell stories about what we do, and who we are. I love how Nick says, in episode one, “I want to ask these people the questions and see what happens.” I think it’s going to be good. Listen to pilot. princess. trash collector. here.”

ABOUT THE SHOW: pilot. princess. trash collector. is a show about work — the jobs we do, the jobs we wanted to do, and all the jobs that did or didn’t happen between point A and point B. Hosted by audio producer Nick Andersen, this show explores Dr. Seuss, Studs Terkel and Richard Scary, but not necessarily all in the same breath.

WHY WE’RE EXCITED ABOUT IT: The biggest reason? Nick Andersen. He’s behind Ministry of Ideas and Hub & Spoke Audio Collective. i mean!
a blurry distant ios photo of mika, a gorgeous tall white sweaty cis man, wearing tight bright pink trousers and a close fit white tank top, standing with one foot on a white piano bench and the other on a white grand piano, holding a white megaphone and speaking to an unseen crowd. the curtain behind him is mauve and a drumset is to his left. he is, i repeat, gorgeous. buy tickets already. he’s gorgeous.
