The field, the narrative, and answerability aren't three things that travel together—the narrative is how the field knows itself, and answerability is what the field demands. Separate them analytically and you have concepts. Leave them unified and you have a living place.

Yes. And the suppression of the potlatch was enclosure: not of land alone but of the perceptual commons. What was enclosed was the capacity to see obligation at all.

What breaks is the relational field, the co-evolutionary narrative, and the capacity to be answerable to it. You can't be answerable to what you can't perceive, and you can't perceive what you've been institutionally severed from—the entanglement of community and the reality of a particular place.

4/ Pressure applied at the level of policy, economy, or popular consent does not map onto a system whose horizon includes occulted sovereignty. External force—military, liberal, or reformist—can act on the regime's material structures, but does not directly engage this deeper register.

3/ This introduces a category error. Wilāyat al-Faqīh—Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist—is not religious decoration on a secular state: it is a provisional logic of rule in the Imam's absence, legitimacy indexed not to representation but to eschatological vacancy.

5/ Their comprehensive, historical suppression confirms the potlatch wasn't quaint custom but functional governance threatening the administrative state precisely because it was grounded in what the state could never manufacture—a relational ontology embedded in deep time. bsky.app/profile/nick...

4/ But we aren't without models. The potlatch of the PNW coastal nations was simultaneously the main governmental institution, legislative body, and the primary, bioregional locus of diplomacy, economy and resource management, in a place-specific event that never disaggregated these activities.

3/ What this actually looks like I don't think anyone can say. That incapacity is itself the point. It's a futurity that will be inherently emergent, organic, collaborative—and democratic in the deepest sense: defined not by procedure but by the cultures and ecosystems that locally constitute it.

Nick Routledge @nickroutledge.bsky.social · 05/05/2026
2/ Which is why any genuine reordering of governance will lean toward subsidiarity—not as political preference but as ontological consequence. The coherence that holds is the coherence that grows from a local embrace: rooted, reciprocal, answerable to the living, contextual grain of reality itself.

Let’s be honest: religion has probably never had such a bad name. Christianity is now seen as “irrelevant” by some, “toxic” by many, and often as a large part of the problem rather than any kind of solution. It’s time to rebuild from the bottom up.
