Funny idea, but this Emmys speech-shortening bit is a bust. Getting played off has been replaced by….getting shamed off?? Speeches deliver fun moments on these awards shows. Now everyone is just rushing through the same names.

said it yesterday but the people who commit this violence increasingly show us that they deeply understand how our information ecosystems process it. It appears to be part of the appeal for them. And yet the response doesn't really change. www.theatlantic.com/technology/a...
The shooters who fall into this mold implicitly understand these internet dynamics. They seek an audience, but they are also acting out to get the world—especially the online world—to respond. “If you read this you are gay lmao” is a trolly, nihilistic thing to inscribe on a bullet casing, but the point is for people to see it, for people like me to write it down so that people like you can read it and feel something, be it shock, outrage, confusion, or sadness. The shooters may not have a coherent ideology, or even be particularly politically motivated per se, but they seem to know the ecosystem they are dropping their horrific acts of violence into.

For some shooters, online communities—with all their irony-poisoning, shitposting, and feuding—are more real, or at least more meaningful, than physical ones. With their senseless violence, these killers are bringing a part of that networked, online chaos to tangible, life-and-death reality. They know that their violence will be flattened, picked apart, argued over, and, crucially, amplified by the justification machine. In this way, they will get what they’re after. The violence will continue.

Given this it makes total sense to implement AI in schools K to university. Waiting for the institution-directed lawsuits from parents. Education administrators are prob feverishly drawing up waivers like one signs before bungee jumping.

I agree the book is valuable because of the unvarnished inside view. But the author and her sense of herself was problematic throughout and made it a weaker read.

I feel this. But I also find myself oddly relieved. We had a thesis that information access was the key to knowledge and wisdom. Turns out intermediaries (like teachers and critics) and shared learning spaces where we have to test our learning and opinions against the thinking of others … matter.

Your comment is incredibly condescending as if I don’t know what it was like to manage my own schedule, make my own breakfast, lock myself in the house as a latchkey kid with two working parents who were workaholics. Compassion Reigns Supreme???🙄

I know. These sentences are hard to craft because I love our educators. The system is cracking underneath the pressure and the kids, I think, are getting the fallout.

I suspect many will blame me for “overbooking” my kids. They are doing normal things. Band. Sports. Show choir. They got email after email over the weekend for the first day of school with dozens of bullet points each to remember. School is different now.

The mental load framing is huge. Today we sent out 3 kids for their first day. The day is booked from 6am to 8pm with school events. 5 different changes of clothes. 4 packed meals. Multiple pickups and drop offs. I get no phones. I do. But asking kids to get all this right for 10 hrs everyday…

Anecdotal but I can confirm from a very different setting, teens are bending this direction with very little intervention. They are seeing the devices as disruptions in their real lives.

Oh lord please. Capital is currency and a medium for value exchange. At best a big pile of capital is POTENTIAL VALUE, but if all it does is reproduce itself it is actually destructive of value. That's how inflation works. Keep up.

There are no “elite brokers” anymore (except in their own mind) They are all in varying degrees of state sponsored demise and/or trauma freeze. The melting down of the neoliberal coalition is gonna take a decade to metabolize and it could get real ugly.

Certainly monoculture has fractured. But I’m less convinced of its absence than I used to be. I just think people who might have been culture brokers in the past are unhappy with what the monoculture likely is Joe Rogan / Sheridanverse / Taylor Swift (in her a-political era) / the NFL

People looking for the morally superior neo liberal choice that can “win the center” are going to be chronically disappointed. Obama works for Netflix now.

You are starting with the premise that capital produces value. That used to be true. Today capital produces capital for the already capitalized. The entrepreneurial case has been systemically weakened by a founder class who has primarily produced predation and extraction.

I’m not sure “for the terminally online” is the sick burn it once was. Macroculture is awash in incel language that started on 4chan, the valley girl accent made popular on TikTok is now standard media fare. Online culture is culture. Particularly as Trump decimated all other cultural engines.

The irony of a self-proclaimed "democracy defender" writing a post that is equal parts censorial and anti-intellectual while fascism rises. Curious, my guy, what kind of democracy are you defending?

People big mad that their word-finding toy is the political lever to move water, land, and energy from humans to bots. The extraction class didn’t use TikTok to justify destroying the world… had they maybe we’d be in a different place.

Nick Richtsmeier @nickrichtsmeier.com · 23/08/2025
You’re making an individual use argument in a systems debate. No one is saying personal use of TikTok makes it good. She’s written on this before: moving the debate from systems to the morality of individual choice is how predatory systems win. In her words choice isn’t power. Power is power.

I liked it for what it was trying to do. I’m on the third draft of a novel trying to do this… it’s tough narratively to not degrade into sci-fi tropes, even while writing contemporary fiction.
