Kat Abughazaleh Changed What's Possible in Political Campaigning
Ignore the specific issues for a second, and look at how she operated her campaign. She taught us lessons on a new way to run for office. You're not supposed to run for congress in a city you just mo...

The Iran War is a regional tragedy and a global crisis. It is an illegal war of choice. Yet Congress has not held a single hearing. Democrats complain in the media but take no action. We are launching a campaign to push them to act. 🧵 #IranHearingsNow.

This is why representation matters in elected office. How do fight this if you haven't lived it? But @fox32chicago.bsky.social is having a debate tomorrow that excludes him. Instead, it includes the candidates who have raised the most money. The district is being denied a chance to hear his voice.

I'd delete this. If this gets out, they really are going to start a Patreon for violence.

He frames those as opposing sides. Wanting immigration laws enforced safely is not the opposing side of wanting ICE out now. You can want both things, and most people do. The opposition to wanting ICE out is wanting state-sanctioned lawlessness. It has nothing to do with law enforcement.

The cruelty of the self defense line: it’s not enough that they killed her, and that they want no accountability for it. They are telling everyone that SHE was the killer. That’s how they want her remembered.

You think you’re getting used to this garbage and developing calluses against it, but they always find a way to cut through.

This whole article is important, but this bit hit me hard. Serving in the DOJ was incredibly meaningful, and there are no pictures of me doing it because why would there be? To see her call her incredibly importantly position a “government job” and complain that it has stalled her follower count…

The opposite. Most of the things I think about all day are things I think about all the time. I would guess that’s true for most people. So when you find a rich seam of human activity or knowledge that you don’t know anything about, it’s exciting. Something new to learn about.

I have no idea what this means or whether I’d agree with this take if I did. But I’m liking it out of love for unashamed specificity. I also have no idea why this would have shown up in my feed but apparently they got it right.

I want democracy for every nation and all people, desperately. But you can only believe that it’s possible for a foreign nation to impose democracy by force if you never really appreciated what it was in the first place.

Meanwhile, it’s the generation after me, who were barely in elementary school when we were protesting, who actually learned the lesson and don’t want this. It’s upside down, but I’m grateful for it.

I was twenty when the Iraq war began. The generations before me had world-building fantasies and they sent people my age to die and to kill to satisfy them. Now, it’s the same people, twenty years older, doing it again. They learned nothing.

I had hoped that the one lesson we could hold onto from the bloody last two decades is that regime change and nation building at gunpoint do not lead to peace and democracy. There are hundreds of thousands who can’t remind us of that because they were killed.

The farce is essential. It demonstrates the completeness and arbitrariness of the takeover, so nobody is unclear.

They know him and like him better. We need to work like hell to convince the people who can be convinced that Democrats are better, not hope that his latest transgression does it for us.

But there's so much reporting about his approval ratings going south, or X latest egregious action upsetting people, as though people are finally waking up. It's wishful thinking. He's a known quantity and we can't keep waiting for people to "wake up."

We've had so long to know who Trump is - decades and decades, including his first term. This isn't a guy we just learned about this year or even five or ten years ago. So the people who support him now know who exactly he is, and so did the ones who voted for him in 2024, 2020, or even 2016.

And yet Democrats keep optimistically reading polls to think things are turning in our favor. Maybe people didn't get it in the first 50 years, but after 51, they're coming around!

I’m seeing a lot of people pointing out that he campaigned on peace… it’s not possible for a man who operates with aggression and dominance in every aspect of his life to also be someone who wants peace.

Agree - Flattening every bad action to one level by saying it’s all uniformly terrible makes it impossible to make progress. Unless you can say why this worse than what has come before, how do you set a standard for what it looks like to do better?

As for elections - there are degrees. Waging war illegally is terrible but not unprecedented. So far I believe we will still have a real election in 2028. That could change but that’s what where I want us to focus.

Helpful point, but I don’t think the lesson of Mamdani’s win is that it’s impossible to tell how feasible anything is. He’s been impeached twice and it failed, and his party is even more in his pocket now. I don’t believe this is the thing that’s going to lead them to break ranks.

Nick Pyati @nickpyati.bsky.social · 04/01/2026
Impeachment is not feasible but winning back the White House is. We shouldn’t go down the road of something that will had Trump a victory when we should be building toward a win that counts.

Thanks for saying it. Drives me crazy that people are calling for it today, like it was a solution we were just waiting for the right moment to use.

We still don't get it. “Trump does whatever he wants without Congress” But then: “Why isn’t Congress doing something?” Of course they should, but the past year shows that the Constitution gives them almost no enforcement. This doesn't stop until we win back the White House. That’s the work.

A lot of questions about whether he can really pull it all off, but undeniable that he created the sense of possibility people have been missing. That's incredibly difficult and important. We're so starved for it that the country (the world?) got excited about one city's mayoral race.

This is NOT a final judgment on whether the administration can deploy troops, only on the temporary restraining order. It's definitely a good sign, but lots could still happen as the case goes through the courts.

Nick Pyati @nickpyati.bsky.social · 24/12/2025
What happened: Illinois and Chicago sued the administration. The federal district court in Chicago issued a temporary restraining order (TRO) blocking the deployment while the lawsuit is ongoing. The administration appealed and it got to the Supreme Court, which declined to end the TRO. That's it.

Where you stand on this should not have anything to do with what you think about Kat’s policy proposals or what she says in this campaign. Where you stand has to be about the rule of law. Every American, in this district and around the country, should stand with Kat as she fights these charges.

As a former federal prosecutor, I know the care that is supposed to go into charging decisions, and this is plainly a political prosecution - an attempt by the Trump Administration to not only intimidate protesters but turn them into propaganda.
