What a fabulous story, beautifully told. But please tell me you wore a smirk as you wrote "shell companies" and "following the trail"!

If there is a streak in humanity in this man, then he must be desiccating inside at the moral contortions he has to endure to keep DJT happy. Or maybe there is none.

I was also offended because my dad was a 'GOPWO'. A 19 yr old RAF Sergeant shot down in France, 5 years POW then home to a commission. All the bright young things jetted past him (he could never rise above Squadron Leader, RAF equiv of Major) and soon came to be his superior. It rankled. (pun, soz.)

From my experience with the military (BFBS jock), a warrant officer can gain a commission but can not serve in any rank higher than major. I remember the occasional older officer who'd come through the ranks being referred to as GOPWOs - Grossly Over Promoted Warrant Officers. Snobbish and nasty.

Never saw protests like this when Obama or Biden were president. Yet again, Donald Trump outstrips them all. Amazing. 🙄

Astonishing. Apart from the human insights, for me the graphics were amazing. This, when you think about it being hand drawn, is just superb.

I'm no expert, but I wonder about the value in spotting commisioning trends. Fishing with slebs, f'rinstance, has become cross-channel popular. Is there anything in the commissioning matrix that can be mined?

Nice try, and I'm in the UK so not part of this fight, but WTF??? Who's your audience? And if you want to use Schumer, dress him properly. Ask @dieworkwear.bsky.social for advice on this. Message good, but he looks like Shambo-Grampa. Get sharper.

I would add that sectors crying out for talented young recruits need to make more of the attractions they offer. Engineering for example. Better-than-average pay, paid degrees, no debt and hugely interestimg work.

I realise we are committing to grid renewal etc, but just as developing countries skipped the telephone landline and went straight to mobile, are there any lessons to be learned from what's happening in Pakistan and elsewhere?

Nick Peters @nickmfgtv.bsky.social · 21/09/2025
Paul, given that solar is now so cheap, and is being adopted at the local and factory level in countries like Pakistan, where the grid is knackered, and simultaneously political forces in the US and UK are vowing to neuter net zero, what are the chances we will actually be left behind?

Hi Ewan, please can we stay in touch. We're developing some editorial around the energy transition to renewables in the next few months and I always believe history has much to say about how the future will go. I can't see the Bluesky DM tool, but if you know how to do it, please send email address!

Hi Louise, does your program address ownership? I am struck by how Katherine Graham put her family's fortune and future at stake to defend W&B. Bezos will never feel that pressure. In that "DGAF because I'm uber-wealthy" lies the rot at the heart of media/journalism. @washingtonpost.com

Markham, very much enjoyed your chat with Daan from Ember Energy. V enlightening! Re Carney, am I right in thinking he's pushing a Canadian LNG exporting facility for Europe that will come on stream in 5+ years (to replace Russian LNG)? Given your conversation with Daan, won't this be insane?

Waste of two gos, if you ask me! (Just kidding - well done.) My similar experience. I have a favourite Line 1 word. The other day I decided to change it 🙄 and got two brown letters as a result. So for Line 2 I used my favourite word (which contained those two letters). And it won!

And of course companies should invest in the digital tech, robotics and automation, at a rate equal to our competitors, that will produce much of the productivity we need. Regions, communities will benefit. And so will the UK. Rant over. Please challenge - all and any input welcome!

In manufacturing, for instance, there is a life-threatening shortage of young engineers. Older ones are retiring, and thanks to the "we are in a post-industrial era" vibe of the 90s/00s, there's a dearth of middle-aged ones to step in, so talent trapped in poor companies should be freed up.

Nick Peters @nickmfgtv.bsky.social · 09/09/2025
Just as post-2008, it means resources are being tied up in companies who, if they can only survive because their payroll is taxpayer-subsidised, should be allowed to die to free up resources for new companies to utilise.

...whose loans banks were reluctant to call in for fear of adding to the dangerous instability of the time, so we have zombie companies today whose existence might be in jeopardy if this corporate welfare was withdrawn.

Nick Peters @nickmfgtv.bsky.social · 09/09/2025
Why is the taxpayer subsidising low wages and thereby company P&L accounts? Is it because there's a risk that if business has to pay a decent wage, unemployment will rise? I understand the reluctance to address that, but just as post-2008 there were tons of zombie companies...

The Employment Rights Bill is a sledgehammer aimed at a problem that needed a finer instrument - exploitation of the lower-paid, pay-cheque-to-pay-cheque precariat, and decent employers are paying for the sins of the exploiters. And then there's working tax credits...

Aslo, an uncritical focus on financial services (which Ms Rain-Smith endorses) hasn't questioned whether they actually return valu for money. And a cultural aversion on the part of SME manufacturers to invest in digital tech puts the sector at a competitive disadvantage. to the EU, USA etc
