Some threaded thoughts from pre-draft news conference with Broncos brass: • Clear RB is a first-round consideration, especially with Payton saying class is light on true 1st-round grades overall. So may not be losing much of an opportunity cost by choosing RB at 20 instead of premium position.

Sam Franklin’s lone career INT was a 99-yard pick-six off Kirk Cousins, but he’s made his living in the NFL as a special teams mainstay. Played 84% of the Panthers’ snaps in that phase last season. Another key piece for Darren Rizzi.

Pretty bullish on a Year 2 jump for Troy Franklin. He was a consistent route winner and was a target of more deep passes than any Broncos player besides Courtland Sutton. His role in Payton’s offense takes time to master. A lot of opportunities to be had if he can sharpen details.

One of my biggest takeaways from being around the Broncos in Palm Beach is just how much Bo Nix's presence has re-energized the franchise. They see a QB who was 4th in EPA from Week 10 on last season, had 3rd-lowest sack rate and completed 70.3% of his passes. And has new weapon in Evan Engram.

Some Sean Payton takeaways: • Felt like the FA RB market was "thin," think they can add in the draft. • Evan Rothstein an important addition to staff he's pursued for some time. • Says injury risks worth taking in "young" FAs Greenlaw, Hufanga, Engram. • Glad not to be in QB market this year.

Note on Michael Burton, whom Luca Evans first reported is re-signing with the Broncos: He played on Darren Rizzi's special teams units in New Orleans in 2020. So familiarity beyond what he has on offense, where he caught a career-high 10 passes for 65 yards past season.

I don’t think is an off-limits position for No. 20 except QB. I’d be surprised if they went with a tackle at that spot unless it’s someone who they thought could start his career inside. Most anything else is in play.

I really think they could end up with a great opportunity to add to the defensive front — either on the interior or on the edge. Derrick Harmon, Kenneth Grant, Shemar Stewart could all be options. Would follow that Eagles model of continuously pouring into the defensive line.

Did not love the third-and-2 play call for the Broncos, deep in the red zone. Offensive line having its way, 5.5 yards per carry on the opening drive, and Denver goes with the fade ball into a tight window. Going to have to convert in close today.
