Upcoming gigs and fun things to do (poetry edition) – August, Early September, 2026
Hey there, Nick fan(s). I'm a little more active on the poetry scene for the next few weeks. It's a bit of a mixed bag and I hope there's something for everyone! We've got short, tight, spoken word/poetry sets, we've got storytelling, we've got a full on 10-15 minute set as part of a slam heat. Three different forms? In this economy?

The Simplest Test of LLMs for Research
I am teaching a general research preparation course for Masters students across my (shiny new) University called RESE 5000 Foundations of Research. It's a four week course as part of a much larger sequence and covers research design, alternatives in research design, paradigms, quant/qual, and a lot of hands on work to develop a small but focussed research design glossary for these students.

Thanks, Fallout 4, I’ll see you on the next playthrough.
Long time, no post. I thought I'd wake this blog up with a post about gaming, as I started playing PS games again after about an 18 month hiatus. I had been getting quite involved in online team games like Division 2 and Helldivers 2 before I quit back in 2025 and I was a little worried about spending that much time gaming when I dived back in.

More delicious Asturian food! 🍜 #Foodsky
Squid croquetas, black with ink, in a green rectangular dish. One has been bitten into, revealing the inky interior, and is being held above the plate in a paper napkin. Cecina de Lyon — dried beef shavings, with little twisty crunchy breadstick things, on a green rectangular plate. Paper thin slices of dry morcilla Iberico sausage shingled on a wooden board.

Nick, Leo, and Juho got a paper published after it was rejected several times!
nickfalkner.com
Finally, the paper with my favourite diagrams has been accepted!
At Koli Calling 2024, which was many lifetimes ago in terms of my last 18 months, I was ... well... ranting with Leo Leppänen and Juho Leinonen about the potential issues with the use of GenAI discussants in CS activities that use social constructivism, given the rapid adoption of Gen AI in chat/discursive situations. We caught up in Helsinki after Koli, sketched out a paper, actually then dedicated enough time to write it (shocking, I know), and started submitting it.

I’ve now realised that when I got sick while travelling, about 90 days ago, I was so sick that it left a visible furrow from right to left in all of my fingernails. I’d seen the impact on my fitness but the fact it slowed my nail growth to less than half? Wow. I wasn’t well _at all_.

Somewhat embarrassingly for an Australian, I have returned from leave sunburned. No excuses, I know better. I’m working from home so I can cover myself in aloe vera and leave my shirt off. I will use more sunscreen this year! ☀️🔥🤦‍♂️

Work and Life
I've just returned from a brief holiday on the Australian East Coast and I had a chance to think about what the new leadership role at the Uni will mean. One thing I felt I had to do, although it was honestly a tough decision to make, was tidy up the work/personal aspects of my social media. This means unfriending (what a loaded term) some people who I've known through work for a while.

Books about Play
Being a subset of interesting books from my collection, accompanied with explanatory texts of varying utility, as well as references to this blog. A very rapid summary in far too much detail. I recently had reason to distill my thoughts on why games, play, and the playing of games were a valid and even necessary area of discussion when talking about education.

Some people are always thinking bigotry and slurs, they’re just waiting for the opportunity to yell it at their victims without censure, to hurt others from the comfort of the safe seats. Bigoted, stupid, cowardly, and evil.

Not surprised at the number of bots/chuds that showed up in this thread to defend the Nazi salute, but I *am* disappointed at the number of people in the comments who chose to argue with those fucking losers. Don't engage the bots/chuds, people. That's what they want. Block them without comment.

Your daily reminder that words are just playthings to fascists. They have no binding to truth, they just say anything to achieve their goals. If they can waste your time arguing with them, they’re stopping you doing anything else.

Hey, social media, here my dinner. Pesto made with basil from my garden!
A white shallow bowl full of bow tie shaped pasta with a green pesto sauce and little bits of prosciutto. There are crackers on the side of the bowl. The bowl is sitting on a wooden chopping board.

Yes, the person with all the money can be dumb as paint. Yes, all that stuff about how clever they are can be well-paid PR pushed through the channels they own. Yes, that means most of what you think is true is coercive nonsense to control the labouring masses. Yes, it sucks.

Britain is not the only country in Europe to be eyeing its water supplies nervously, but it is the only nation to have sold its water resources — including pipes, reservoirs, boreholes and treatment plants in England and Wales to private sector owners, now mostly a clutch of sovereign wealth, infrastructure and pension funds.

Those companies — which bought the monopolies with no debt and were handed £1.5bn to make improvements - have borrowed £60bn since 1989. Much of that has been used not for new investment but to pay more than £70bn in dividends to water company owners.
