We have three excellent speakers who will cover existing research and knowledge gaps regarding working conditions, worker organization and governance, as well as the practicalities of recruiting, retaining and training workers across South Asia, Eastern and Southern Africa and the UK

To date, research has largely neglected to systematically examine the role of labour in conservation despite its central importance to day-to-day operations, to rural livelihoods and wellbeing in local communities, to conservation conflicts and project failures in the global north and global south

I'm presenting at my first @pollenetwork.bsky.social conference! Zoos are influential but overlooked in-situ conservation actors. By working ex- and in-situ, is there a risk they shape landscapes to look like exhibits, rather than the other way around? Session 10, July 2, 16:30–18:30 #POLLEN2026

Who are the people doing the actual work of conservation? How many of them are there and what are their working conditions? And whose labour remains invisible in the process? I think this episode is eye-opening on an often neglected aspect of conservation. 🌍🦤🧪 ➡️ pod.fo/e/3dd89f
Podcast episode cover art for Tommy's Outdoors Conservation and Science, titled 'ConLab: Conservation Labour'. The image features two guests in a split-screen video call format against a dark olive greeawsn background with a gold border. On the left, a woman with dark hair tied up, smiling broadly and wearing a teal zip-up fleece. On the right, a man with shoulder-length brown hair and a beard, wearing over-ear headphones and a white patterned knit jumper, also smiling. Both appear to be in home settings.

in case you're wondering, "what's the harm in claiming an extinct species has been brought back from the dead" when it most certainly has not, our interior secretary is already using it to justify taking animals off the endangered species list
The mission of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is to work with others to “conserve, protect, and enhance fish, wildlife, plants, and their habitats for the continuing benefit of the American people.”

The Department of the Interior is excited about the potential of “de-extinction” technology and how it may serve broader purposes beyond the recovery of lost species, including strengthening biodiversity protection efforts and helping endangered or at-risk species.

The Endangered Species List has become like the Hotel California: once a species enters, they never leave. In fact, 97 percent of species that are added to the endangered list remain there. This is because the status quo is focused on regulation more than innovation.

It’s time to fundamentally change how we think about species conservation. Going forward, we must celebrate removals from the endangered list - not additions. The only thing we’d like to see go extinct is the need for an endangered species list to exist. We need to continue improving recovery efforts to make that a reality, and the marvel of “de-extinction” technology can help forge a future where populations are never at risk.

Since the dawn of our nation, it has been innovation – not regulation – that has spawned American greatness. The revival of the Dire Wolf heralds the advent of a thrilling new era of scientific wonder, showcasing how the concept of “de-extinction” can serve as a bedrock for modern species conservation.

The Dire Wolf revival carries profound cultural significance as it embodies strength and courage that is deeply encoded within the DNA of American identity and tribal heritage.

Breakthroughs of this nature will inspire leading minds and future generations of innovators to chase the impossible, capture it, and unleash its potential!

The Department of the Interior looks forward to a vibrant future full of innovation that advances core missions such as wildlife conservation.

Nature is not a blocker to growth. The UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves has claimed that 'The balance has gone too far in the direction of always protecting every bat and every newt.' But how can this statement be true when the UK is one of the most nature depleted countries in the world?🌍
A thriving natural world is the foundation of economic growth and vital for health and wellbeing. Language that pits these against each other is unhelpful and deeply concerning.

The snow textures the world, it crunches, squelches, rasps, cracks, thuds and rustles. It reveals the rhythms of the city, as it reveals the habits of animals. SCars are privileged over people as piles block paths and cut-throughs that are open the rest of the year, sacrificed for clear car parks.

Nature is generally muffled and in waiting. The trees bare, the grass covered. The only immediately apparent sign of life is the birds. Hooded crows hoarsely croak in the trees and groups of sparrows and tits flock to those gardens with feeders hanging in the freezing air. Hood crow (Corvus cornix)
