Some gorgeous reviews starting to trickle in. I wonder if the writers have any idea how much these mean to an author?

My new baby is ready to roll, so the release date has been moved forward to the 31st July so you'll have the full weekend to read! The preorder is priced at 99p (yes, it's even cheaper than an Andy Burnham bus ticket). Initial test reader reports say it's a good'n :-) www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0H62D1P8R

Our house in the low French alps, where it’s very cold in winter, and very hot in summer, is entirely heated and cooled by these split system heat pumps (which we have associated with solar pv ) and it’s all incredibly economical. All the best. Nick x

Nick Alexander @nick-alexander.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

Also, split systems can be run in winter as heat pumps for heating purposes, producing 3.5-5.5 kW of heat for every one kilowatt consumed. Thus having a proper split system can economise more in winter when electricity is carbon intensive than using it in summer for air-conditioning when it is not.

Nick Alexander @nick-alexander.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

I live in the south of France where it’s hot and everyone uses split air conditioners. All ours all linked to energy monitors and they rarely draw more than 300w in air-conditioning mode, even though their rated cooling power is 2.7 kW and the peak consumption is rated at 1.5.

Nick Alexander @nick-alexander.bsky.social · 28/05/2026

Hi Chris, I saw your article but I wanted to print out a few things you might have missed: Firstly fixed air-conditioners are generally rated for cooling power not consumption (you seem to have got the two confused )and very rarely draw their peak rating even then.

5/5 Learn about Amazon sponsored products and do it.... I can reassure you: self Publishing and KDP still work just fine. perhaps not as well as in 2014 when a book could spend a year in the top 100. But well enough to earn a living. Nick xxx www.amazon.co.uk/Little-Bit-S...

4/5 Write a book people want to read. Pay someone to proof it properly. Design a cover and test it with your readers first. Do not attempt to "monetise" your most faithful readers by overpricing during pre-order and launch. Take the time to learn how to do some facebook advertising properly.

3/5 That's not my bestselling launch ever – not by a long stretch – but it is an excellent score for a self published novel, and these figures are easily double those of the last two launches I had with "powerful" "expert" "mainstream" publishers. So yes if you:

1/5. A little encouragement for any author friends out there: I've seen a few articles and many comments recently from people saying that self publishing and/or KDP don't "work" anymore. Various reasons are given: Excessive churn in the amazon chart, too much competition, too many publishers...

Nearly 2 months in and still charting kiddies!

020

Nick Alexander @nick-alexander.bsky.social · 09/02/2026

Well, my latest self-published baby has now (after only 7 weeks) sold more copies & had more page reads than the preceding novel published with a major publisher 9 months ago. Never doubt you can go it alone, kids. And never let anyone tell you that people "just don't want to read" your stuff.

The Bottle Of Tears (aka Let the Light Shine) is currently a deal on kindle at 99p. So if you haven’t ever read this one, grab a copy. An oldie but a goodie even if I do say so myself.

So to everyone who contradicted me when I said we’d given up on The White Lotus because it was dreadful: mea culpa - you were right and I was wrong. Season 1 is great and season 2 is brilliant. Next: on to season 3!

The novel the publishers all refused. So, I self published it and it went straight to #1 and stayed in the top 100 for over a year, going on to sell over 300,000 copies. Ahhh that was a fun time.
