Some legacies of the past may persist in how we think about and conceptualise suicide preventiontoday. History can shape and remind us of where we have been. Lived and living experience - something that was under realised in earlier times - today guides deeper understanding and action for tomorrow.

In Helsinki to see how lived experience was Alva Aalto’s lifelong ambition and recurring theme. In the 1920’s Aalto proposed that the full potential of human life should be grounded in human experience. Two sketches depicting the difference between rooms for a “vertical man”, plus side lighting.
