#MWE 28. Willow "Petal Rock Black" (2026) What better way 2 wrap up than 2 explore the beginning, middle, & present of one artist? A 26 minute collection of sketches; not a statement, but a vibe. Feels laced w joy in the creative process. If there's a statement, it's that: making shit is fun.
The cover of "Petal Rock Black" by Willow. At least four pairs of hands and arms join in a web of solidarity, mostly obscuring the face of someone (presumably Willow). All the arms are from people of color.

#MWE 27. Danny Brown "Atrocity Exhibition" (2016) A nightmare trip thru funhouse mirrors, knowing that ur addicted 2 coke and you'll have 2 survive doing rails off every surface in there 2b able 2 think get out. But also there's great bars & beats that fit the atmosphere, so holy shit what a trip.
The cover of Danny Brown's "Atrocity Exhibition". Bold white capitalized text says the artist's name vertically on the left and right, and album title on top and bottom horizontally. The title is repeated three times, like there's a glitch or a problem with the vertical hold. This black border surrounds a picture of Danny Brown where he's wearing a leather jacket and a t-shirt, standing against a wall. Everything is warped with chromatic aberration and distortion, like you're watching scrambled porn. Through the distortion, Danny's skull is partially visible through his face, as his eyeball.

#MWE 26. Category 7 (2024) Liked it, but wanted to love it. Much better live. The songs are good, but they never find another gear, up or down, and it gets repetitive. Also, the album is mastered way too hot; we're talking near-Death Magnetic levels here. But Jon Bush still fucking HAS it.
The cover of Category 7's self-titled album. A water spout is wreaking havoc on a city while waves churn under a bridge that is being heavily damaged.

#MWE 25. Three Man Army "A Third Of A Lifetime" (1971) A bit dated, but the songs are good. At the time, this would've probably beat ass. What makes this album worth listening to is the subtle twist & turns of harmony or guitar lines that go off the beaten path.
The cover of Three Man Army's "A Third Of A Lifetime". There is a pair of hands cocking a handgun (the barrel of which is off frame to the left), but instead of a hammer, there is the headstock of a Fender guitar.

#MWE 24. Arctic Monkeys "Humbug" (2009) A little more understated than their first two, but the songs are still good and they've still got the swagger.
The cover of Arctic Monkeys's "Humbug". It's a photo of the band with the color washed out with more of a red-ish tint. Two of them are sitting against a wall. One of them is against an opposite wall with a pensive look on his face, and the other is wearing a white hoodie and laughing, standing between the two sitting.

#MWE 23. Franz Ferdinand (2004) Aside from track 2 being utter dogshit (seriously, who heard the finished product and signed off on it), this is a pretty good indie rock record. It's uptempo (which is how I like this sort of thing), it has hooks, what's not to like?
The cover of Franz Ferdinand's debut album. It has the band name in white lettering on a black background with a yellow bar in between them. The lettering is at an angle. It has a black background.

#MWE 22. Hawkwind (1970) Billy Joel once quipped that his band Atilla (also from 1970) was "psychedelic bullshit". I think I feel the same way about Hawkwind as a whole. This was not for me.
The cover of Hawkwind's self-titled 1970 album. Lizard, snake things with arms and shoulders but dozen-foot long reptile bodies emerge from hives made out of leaves in a desert. Some of the leaves blow up toward the top and form the name of the band.

#MWE 21. Caroline Polachek "Pang" (2019) The building blocks for her next album are there, but there's only 3 songs I vibe w. The rest are kind of formless soup with great production and phenomenal vocals (seriously, how does she DO that?!?), but don't really become songs ever. Or ideas.
The cover of Caroline Polachek's "Pang". Caroline is climbing a rope ladder against a cloudy, churning sky with a slight streak of blue sky in the upper quarter. She is wearing a pseudo-Lara Croft outfit (except with long leather pants instead of shorts).

#MWE 20. Clipping. "Visions Of Bodies Being Burned" (2020) Weakest Clipping album I've ever heard (and I've heard 'em all). Lots of beats that aren't beats; they've done industrial well, its kinda their thing, but this just has no sauce. There Existed An Addiction To Blood (2019) was far better.
The cover of Clipping's "Visions Of Bodies Being Burned". It's a top down view of various kinds of teeth, human and animal placed on a field of black.

#MWE 19. Missy Elliot "Da Real World" (1999) What a dud. When you attempt to sound futuristic some of it's gonna be dated 27 yrs later but at least Supa Dupa Fly had songs to back it up; all this has is aesthetic; no substance. Tracks 3-6 are fine, the rest are not worth revisiting.
The cover of Missy Elliot's "Da Real World". Missy Elliot holds something that looks suspiciously like a smart phone (which would be wild since this came out in 1999). She stands belly up to a black reflective surface, wearing a collared shirt and leather tie over a leather outfit of some sort. The sky is roiling black clouds behind her with a lightning strike happening.

#MWE 18. Joni Mitchell "Court And Spark" (1974) The beginning of her jazzy period. "Help Me" and "Down To You" especially rule. There's some top notch orchestration adding to the jazz rock foreground, filling out this technicolor trek.
The cover of Joni Mitchell's "Court And Spark". It's a manila colored background. The artist name is bottom center, one third of the way up in cursive. The title is one quarter of the way down from the top, also centered, also in cursive. They both are written in see-through coloration, and have lines connecting them to form a box around a small, square-shaped picture in the center. I'm not entirely sure what it is, but it may be an abstract representation of Ms. Mitchell standing in front of some mountains. Something on her back (or front?) looks like a faint blue cape with gray dots on it. The nature scene in the back goes from yellow corn to green trees, to blue mountains to taller gray mountains. There is a cloud painted on top with a sponge. Joni Mitchell painted this herself.

#MWE 17. Sabrina Carpenter "Short n Sweet" (2024) The Sorceress of Sex, the Scion of Summer, the Baroness of Bops. Production & songwriting are so fucking tight and everything hits. Put this one on and fall under its spell. (Lyrics might be a YMMV situation, tho.)
The cover of Sabrina Carpenter's "Short n' Sweet". Sabrina looks over her shoulder at the camera. She has a lipstick mark on her shoulder. Behind her is a clear blue sky and a body of water.

#MWE 16. Willow "Ardipithecus" (2015) Not an album I'd necessarily recommend to anyone but the hardcores. She's still feeling things out (like her singing voice and lyrics), but there's some cool shit on here if you know where to look and what lens to see it through.
The cover of Willow's "Ardipithecus". Five nude, gender ambiguous figures are against a gray background. Going left to right: A sickly tan figure with black hair kneels facing away from the camera on their tippy toes crouched in a ball hugging their knees. Next to that is a figure with gray green skin and purple hair kneeling with their back to the camera but looking over their shoulder. The third figure is an off white color with dark gray hair, bent at the waist trying to touch their toes, head pointed to the right. Their red eyes are open and they're looking at the camera. The fourth is standing upright, a caucasian with green hair, head down, eyes closed. The fifth is a blue skinned, blue haired figure, levitating and looking up at their third eye.

#MWE 15. King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard “Murder Of The Universe” (2017) Sure is a King Gizzard album. Gets really old about the halfway point since it's basically one long song broken up into 21 parts, with not much change. Still not bad, but could have used a bit of a switchup at some point.
The cover of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's "Murder Of The Universe". It looks like a haunted mountain with hands and a face is absolutely wrecking an ancient city of some kind. I'm not sure that's what's happening, that's just my best guess. The color palette is mostly green, tan, gray and blue, with some blue green nebulae in the night sky above for good measure.

#MWE 14. Black Sabbath "Headless Cross" (1989) Know what I said about Phil Collins? This is like a little bit of Velveeta drizzled onto a stack of Kraft Singles. A slight upgrade, but still bad (and without the good songwriting to save it either). Title track rips, though.
The cover of Black Sabbath's "Headless Cross". A gravestone in the shape of a cross with a circle running through the cross part is coming out of a fog covered ground in the dark of night. The moon is full, but small and slightly cloud covered overhead in the top left. Top right is the band logo in purple, and left center is the title in font about half the size. This layout, I tells ya.

#MWE 12. Hi/Jack "Sunny Side Up" (2018) How'd I not know one of my friends recorded an EP at Sun Studio eight years ago? No bass guitar on this, but that's been Hi/Jack's style for most of their run. Nothin' fancy, but the idea is to get back to basics. It's rock 'n' roll; let chyer hair down.
The cover of Hi/Jack's "Sunny Side Up". The two band members are looking at pictures on the wall at Sun Studio, which is where the EP was recorded.

#MWE 10. Death From Above 1979 "The Physical World" (2014) A band that I heard on a comp once, then only heard of a few times afterwards. Checked this out of the library, and it's a pretty decent hard rock record. No (to minimal) bullshit, just a distorted bass, some drums and some vocals.
The cover of Death From Above 1979's "The Physical World". A black and white cartoon version of the band members with elephant trunks instead of noses stands atop a real hilltop clearing above a city below. Based on perspective, it's hard to estimate how tall this cut out is. It is dusk.

#MWE 9. Al DiMeola "Orange And Blue" (1994) Gets a little too new age-y in spots, but otherwise, DiMeola's compositional and improvisational skills are still top notch. If you can get past the post-synclavier/dawn of "world music" aesthetics, there's some good songs here.
The cover of Al Di Meola's "Orange And Blue". An abstract drawing of a doorway gouged into a tan wall. The door is a bunch of hatch strokes with a square of blue paint just below the center.

#MWE 8. Alice Merton "Visions" (2026) Another pretty good album from Alice Merton. I'd say better than her last two, but that's the thing; they all kinda blur together. She's never great or terrible, but always pretty good. Always worth at least a listen.
The cover of Alice Merton's "Visions". Merton is taking a pair of golden binoculars away from her eyes while peering up through a solid bush of flowers. Behind her is a partly cloudy blue sky with her name in the top left corner and the album title in the top right. Reflected in the lenses is a scene of a beach at sunset with someone standing in the right lens.

#MWE 7. Van Halen "Balance" (1995) Not worth the trouble. Worse than VH III; at least that one has an identity (and a handful of good songs). "Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do" is STILL dogshit 31 years later. Imagine hearing it every hour on the hour cuz rock stations thought this was a big deal.
The cover of Van Halen's "Balance". Naked conjoined twins ride a see saw (with the handle blocking their junk) 'midst a post-apocalyptic landscape. It looks pretty ass, which fits this ass album.

#MWE 6. Stevie Wonder “Songs In The Key Of Life” (1976) Yeah, this is his best album. There's a reason it went diamond and won his third Album Of The Year Grammy. What a statement.
The cover of Stevie Wonder's "Songs In The Key Of Life". Concentric circles of orange, sun-flamed clouds go inward toward the center, where a blown out black and white drawing of Stevie sits. His name is on the third to last ring and the album title is on the second to last.

#MWE 5. Madonna "Confessions On A Dance Floor" (2005) Really don't get what the big deal was w this album; "Hung Up" is the only song of note. Couple others caught my ear, but only because they were up against the most generic four-on-the-floor dance pop 2000's money could buy.
The cover of Madonna's "Confessions On A Dance Floor". A red-haired Madonna is kneeling facing away from the camera, bending backwards with her head facing up and her left arm straight out. Her name is in neon lights on the lower third, with the O in Madonna as a disco ball. The title is in cursive below her name on the bottom right. There are some blurry lights in the background.

#MWE 4. Bear Proof Suit "A Suit To Alter Fate 2005-2008" (2010) A curiosity I partook in from the Beaker merch table at the show we played. A lot of really cool punk/crossover shit here. (Online the album cover is pixelated a.f. 4 some reason, but on the CD it's fine) Recommend this hidden gem.
The cover of Bear Proof Suit's "A Suit To Alter Fate" (2010). A giant robot astronaut stands over Europe, tall enough to go beyond lunar orbit. A moon with a bear's face is above the horizon to their left. The band name is a constellation in the top left quadrant.

The cover of The Charlatans' "Us And Us Only" (1999). It's a collage of black and white photographs of the band members from various photo shoots. The band name is across the top in bold white font and the album name is written on a piece of masking tape stuck on the bottom right corner.

The cover of Lenny Kravitz's "5" (1998). Lenny is partially visible in the bottom left corner of frame, sitting in the back seat of a car with orange leather seats and white roof interior. A big black number 5 is the only text on the cover, in the upper left third.

#MWE 1. Janet Jackson “All For You” (2001) I thought this was gonna be a run-of-the-mill dance pop album from 2001, but it's electro-R&B with unconventional sounds & samples; knocked me for a loop. The dance pop songs are good too, just didn't want 73 mins of that. Wish granted! One of her best.
The cover of Janet Jackson's "All For You" (2001). Janet lays on her side on a white bedspread facing the camera and smiling. Her name in a flowy, cursive font is on top of the lower third of this picture, and the title is very tiny under Janet's armpit. The explicit lyrics sticker is in the bottom right.

#MWE Day 28: Queensryche "Operation: Mindcrime" (1988) Oh, so THIS is where all prog metal comes from! Very ahead of it's time (there's even a tribal nu-metal beat on here; in NINETEEN EIGHTY EIGHT). Anybody who's into prog metal who hasn't needs to hear this; it's the building blocks. #Music
The cover of Queensryche's "Operation: Mindcrime". A black and white photograph of a crowd of people, many with raised fists. A picture of a nun shouting angrily is superimposed into the background to look gigantic in comparison. The band name and title of record are in a red and white band across the top. There is a large yellow and black logo (presumably having to do with the story (it's a concept album)) smack dab in the middle on the top layer. The chair is carved, dark brown wood, with thin legs and arms. At the top, there is a carving of the body of a winged creature (the head is out of shot, so no way to specifically identify it). The back and seat are covered in blue with an ornate gold pattern over the top.

The floor is white marble. There is smooth, light brown wood paneling a third of the way up the wall. There is a sepia-toned floral pattern of wallpaper above that. A small, round sign at the left reads: "Legacy Room - Fashion Week".

#MWE Day 15: Van Halen "OU812" (1988) After the 1st three songs, I was like "This is better than 5150" then the rest of the album happened. The most lifeless this lightning rod of a band ever sounded & its not just the production (which the band admits sucked). Limp heaps of nothing. #Music
The cover of Van Halen's "OU812". The band is in black and white on a solid black background, arranged somewhat similarly to The Beatles's "With The Beatles" from 1964. From left to right: Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Eddie Van Halen and Alex Van Halen. The band's name and album title are in the top left corner. The band name is aquamarine, and the title is white.

#BookTalk 6. The Feral Detective By: Jonathan Lethem Wouldn't call it good, but I'd call it interesting...I think. No ending, no real point either. It's just odd. Written in that "literary" style that makes you think it's an allegory, but nah. Just weird shit, bruh. #Books #Reading #Fiction
The cover of Jonathan Lethem's "The Feral Detective". The camera looks up at a series of palm trees. Everything is tinted orange. The title and author name overlay the picture in giant white block letters.

#MWE Day 14: The Haas Company & Jerry Goodman "Thirteen" (2024) Liked the first two tracks, then track three slams into autopilot & track four is 9 min. of flaccid wank. Also never thought I'd see the words "This Thing Ain't Gonna Suck Itself (feat. Jerry Goodman)", but now I have. #Music
The cover of "Thirteen" by The Haas Company & Jerry Goodman. It's a violin in space with some digital runes floating around.

#MWE Day 13: The World We Live In "Star - Broken Soul" (2023) So, Barber Beats, eh? Sure, it's a vibe. No idea who actually came up with the songs since it says "These tracks are not original. I slightly edit them and give them a new context", but whatever they did sounds good. #Music
The cover of "Star - Broken Soul" by The World We Live In. A black and white picture of a closeup on the face of a Greek statue has a thin white border around it with a tab of some kind on the bottom right, like this was being viewed through some alien OS where they use black and white dots as characters. This picture is the right two thirds of the cover. The left third is block white kanji. On the bottom right is the "Dolby Surround" logo. All of this is on a solid green background.

A sales sticker (like if this was a CD or vinyl) is over the top right of the cover. On that sticker (from left to right) are two plus signs at the top and bottom left corners. A cartoon character holding a gun sideways with an extended clip pointed to the left. In one stack: the band's initials in all capital letters, a row of kanji and a barcode. In the top right corner of the sticker is a logo of a gridded planet with a ring around it.

#MWE Day 12: Vylet Pony "Cutiemarks (And The Things That Bind Us)" (2021) Not just hyper pop, this is hyper...music. It's trying everything and doing a pretty damn good job at it all. Don't know if I like this or Carousel (2023) more, but fuck competition. This shit fucks. #Music
The cover of Vylet Pony's "Cutie Marks". A punk My Little Pony OC screams into a microphone on a red background.
