OWL Purdue needs to be phased out of the English teacher repertoire (including mine). It had its time. Things have changed. Let it go. Also it has so many aggressive ads that my laptop literally starts to make strange sounds if I linger on any of the pages.

Grading and really REALLY wishing I had an anonymous account. Would so like to vent.

"You can work in the office just as well as home." How to explain? Trading water cooler chat breaks for putting the washing into the dryer makes my life easier? Being able to get up from tough grading and stare into my refrigerator makes my brain go? What's so great about offices?

I love teaching community college. Me announcing feedback: "I graded these late, so if you see any confusing bits that sound like Klingon, let me know and I'll clarify." High school enrolled student: "Klingon?" Retiree beside him: "I'll explain later."

The hardest part of teaching writing, for me, is when a student thinks their work makes perfect sense, and I literally can't figure out what they're trying to communicate. It's so hard to even start the feedback.

I got to introduce the rules for informed consent and interview strategies today. This part is always so hopeful. Training our future contributors in the research field.

I have classes that hate AI. I also have classes where most of the papers are eerily similar. I don't like this game.

Grading papers and shopping for my Halloween costume every chance I get. Being an adult is different than I expected.

I teach writing and research and therefore, obviously, greatly dislike gen AI. But the worst, to me, is what it's doing to recipe sharing culture. We can't trust anything anymore. Measurements all over the place.

I start all my discussion replies with "Thanks for sharing!" and several of my students have started doing this in their peer responses. They're not always cute, but dang it this is cute.

I did a search for the best libraries in NC, and the little AI summary had the Billy Graham Library as number one. GUYS.

A class of 35 doesn't seem so hard until you're grading essays, hit number 16 and realize... you're not even halfway done.

Puts four exclamation points in the discussion reply. Goes back and changes one to a period. Goes back and changes it back to an exclamation point... maybe one more time... Meanwhile, the student's canvas notifications: ping, ping, ping, ping

Intrusive gen AI tools have vanilla-ed student writing into the beige-est of dry crackers. The writing I see now is *nothing* like the writing I saw 5 years ago, but each paper's writing style now is remarkably similar to the next one in the pile. Uniformity, conformity, sameness- I need caffeine.

Asked the research class full of criminal justice majors to write a "fun fact" about their chosen topics. I have my thickest cardigan and a cup of soothing tea. Wish me luck. I need to sleep tonight.

I read a book on Greek myths when I was little, which resulted in me making up the pronunciation of most of the gods and goddess names, since I'd never heard them spoken. For a long time I thought Hades's wife was: 👜-a-☎️

My love's happy place is Costco, Sam's, any big box store really. He's been stressed all month, and I can no longer fit anything in our kitchen fridge, garage fridge, or box freezer. If he doesn't balance this grocery hobby with a cooking hobby, I am going to have to start feeding the neighbors.

Furniture stores advertise kid rooms as all pink/blue with some animal themes. As a kid, I wanted a velvet canopy bed, treasure chests full of fake jewels and gold coins, a shelf overflowing with giant books and ribbon-wrapped or wax-sealed scrolls--the old school, crinkly yellow parchment kind.

I have a link that has to be available in order to work in my online class, and I very carefully label it as something my students do not need to worry about, it is just for me, teacher only, no touchy-- And, every term, a couple of somebodies touchy. They can't not touchy.

The metal pan people are already angry about how you will cook your food tomorrow. I can hear this long inhale as they collectively prepare to yell, "You didn't sufficiently heat the pan first! It's your fault the food stuck!" Scramble eggs at your own risk.

My favorite part of being alive is making things. And people telling me "Don't worry, you don't have to do that anymore" Is like the creepiest disconnect ever. I don't understand how they don't understand.

I know I am an Old because I'm still amazed that the whole of the Oxford English dictionary is just... online. For free. I couldn't afford the Merriam Webster collegiate dictionary back in 2005. And now here's the OED. For free.

Sometimes I think what I do (teaching writing) is common sense and doubt my expertise. And then someone gives the most awful, thoughtless and inconsiderate feedback ever in a professional development peer review discussion. Thanks for the reminder, I guess.

Had my kiddos and didn't sleep much while they were little. Thought that was normal. Now they're growing up and such night owls, and I realize the little baby versions of these kids were just enjoying the night and probably keeping mama awake for funsies.

Are you really a shy person, or do you just spend a lot of time around people with completely different interests from yours? I love watching taciturn young ones light up at their pokemon tournaments and card game meet ups. Finding your people is a kind of magic.

"Literacy is essential. It is the crux of education." "So we should pay English teachers...?" "Oh, nothing, nada, that's a nonsense degree, they should've known better than to major in English, there's no money in that."

Reads research about how holding a warm mug of something gives people the warm fuzzies, and they attribute those fuzzies to anyone they happen to be talking to at the time. "Come in, class, and please grab something from the complimentary hot chocolate bar while we go over the syllabus."

Have students analyze an article that doesn't automatically align with its title. I have one with a generic title about stress management, but the article is focused on senior citizens and their caregivers. Takes .002 seconds to see who actually read the thing.

I always think about international travelers on the 4th of July. Kind of worry about them a bit. Because I live on the SC border, and the amount of explosives that are just common and regular as fireworks here... Even if foreigners are prepared for a US 4th of July, no they aren't.

Literacy crisis? Sure, but there are still clusters who read 2 per week and furiously tap their feet and point at calendars waiting for authors to finish their sequels. There are still readers. Ready, waiting, and more likely than ever to collect books like they're pokemon.

Everybody thinks they're weird, I know, but when I write a story about an undercover alien navigating society, acting like I imagine the normies act, my writing partner is like "He's gotta be less obvious that he's an alien." And I'm like... I haven't got to the alien part yet.
