This is also, partially, Riot’s fault, for trying to make “no racism” and “no patriarchy” society. Jayce’s difficulties could be so easily explained to the pressure hanging upon him of being the man of the house and that has to carry his father’s legacy and/or take care of his mother.

There is definitely something to be said about the way people treat Jayce that can be seen as trying to overcorrect themselves (?) to try and avoid being racist or discriminatory, only for it to come out as flattening Jayce’s character AND stripping anything that makes him “latino”

Being usually written like it’s something benign or almost “perfect”, and its extremely hard for me to picture Jayce as a second gen “latino” immigrant, a single child of a widow, a man, AND having this non tumultuous relationship with them (but more specifically his mom).

This is very interesting commentary . As a peruvian person who writes jayce-centric fics alot, I guess I never sat down to analyse my writing or Jayce characterisation through this specific lense. But I do see what you mean when you talk about his relationship with Ximena and/or his dad+

And when he looks down, Viktor is smiling, eyes glistening gold as they stare up at Jayce. “What does it matter?” He murmurs. “They were never you.”

It makes him stutter over his words. “I’m just confused—” he says, eyes shut and trying to react to this information like a normal person. “You have a boyrfriend, I thought—” He is interrupted by a small, delightful giggle.

“Go ahead, laugh it up.” He mutters, “28 and a virgin. What a hoot, right?” “Viktor— why would I—“ He doesn’t even know where to begin. Viktor takes another swig of the bottle. And then lays his cheek on his knees, staring at Jayce from under his lashes.

“Jayce! I never—“ he stops himself, clamping his mouth shut. All Jayce’s thoughts screech to a halt. He feels as the world narrows down to those rosy cheeks, plump pink lips and aggravated expression. “What?” Jayce breathes.

His vague disappointment turning into a careful anger when he imagines Viktor’s first time being the opposite of something good. “Hey…” Jayce says gently, placing his hand on his back. “If you don’t wanna tell me about it you don’t have to, you know?”

Viktor scrunches his nose, snapping his head back and groaning. “No— that’s not what I meant.” He folds his legs towards his chest, hugging them as he tries to make himself smaller. Jayce frowns.

Jayce doesn’t know why he feels disappointed. He should be happy that Viktor’s first time was good— that someone took care of him. Even when it wasn’t him. “Oh?” He decides to tease him. “Good then? You have to tell me about it.”

Long enough that Jayce, worried about him choking, stops him with a hand on his wrist. “Geez, that bad?” Viktor scowls. Making that pretty pout Jayce used to love to kiss. He still wants to. Wishes he could wash it away with his own lips. “No.” Viktor retorts.

“Your virginity! How was it?” Jayce presses. “Who was the lucky guy?” Viktor’s face becomes red extremely quickly. Eyes wide, he tries to hide by snatching the bottle from Jayce’s hand and taking a *very* long swig. Perhaps too long.

And how it never got resolved. “How was your first time, in the end?” Jayce asks, taking a swig from his bottle, nudging Viktor with his knee. Sue him, he is curious. Viktor hums, eyes hazy and seemingly not understanding the question. “What do you mean?”

But, with alcohol-induced lack of filters, their conversation turns a corner that they both know is inappropriate to have with an ex. Worse yet, when Viktor is in a committed relationship. It’s just that, Jayce remembers the careful tenderness of their slowly growing sexual life.

One night out, Viktor’s boyfriend can’t make it. And so, drunk on cheap beer and vodka, Jayce and Viktor gravitate away from the group, ending up alone somewhere secluded. They talk and reminisce of their friendship (and relationship) in college, all through a pretty lense of nostalgia.

But, as their group starts coalescing more thanks to Cait’s and Vi’s relationship, Jayce starts befriending Viktor again. And his boyfriend too— who, Jayce loads to admit, is a decent dude. No matter how much he wished he could hate him.

Jayce thinks he could’ve broken his teeth with how tense he smiled at him when he went over to introduce himself. The thing is that, even when Jayce had gone through two rebounds— and countless horrid situationships, he never could get over Viktor.

The addition that catches Jayce’s attention the most, however, is the man that currently has a possessive hand around Viktor’s waist. That’s his boyfriend, of course, as so eloquently put by Cait. One whopping year together.

Viktor’s hair has grown below his ears, and he has dyed the tips blond. He has found his style too—something comfortable but academic adjacent. Perfectly fitting his personality.

Five years later, they meet again by chance on Vi’s birthday party. Cait had very conveniently “forgotten” to warn him. Buy, Jinx had asked if she could bring a friend, which turned out to be Viktor. Alot of complicated feelings bubble up real fast when Jayce’s eyes land on Viktor after so long.
