And so "Tell the plagiarism machine to write a story with this premise" spit out writing that more often specifically stated the premise and this is somehow a useful way to detect AI stories? No, it's a useful way to detect someone doing exactly what you did, which no one will do What a stupid thing

In fact I'm going to be extra pissy about it "To generate mirrored AI stories, we reverse-engineer writing prompts from each human story by prompting Gemini 2.5 Flash to infer the underlying premise" So they took a human story, told AI to describe a premise, then took THAT and fed it to AI

Oh my dear I tried to start reading the methodology and it seems to be "We used AI to feed AI to design some AI tools to create some AI stories that we evaluated with AI based on some AI developed criteria plated with an AI reduction and some shaved AI sprinkled on top"

Spangler, Wendig, Phillion at the very least are authors I've gotten a book from you and then bought more of their books. Also some authors where I missed the giveaway and picked up the book on my own.

It is absolutely the sort of thing one says to mislead And we've reached a point where basically anything that can be misleading we must assume IS misleading, and on purpose. I really don't like having to assume this, it's making me grumpy.

I looked in to numbeo and it is so much worse than you think. It is literally just a site where people submit thier rating of cities on various topics. NYC is unsafe because a lot of people have voted it as unsafe, nothing more.

The last time I was awarded some surprise novelty socks, they were supposed to read on the bottom "My book is open" and "Your mouth is closed". There was a collation error, however, and both of my socks just say "Your mouth is closed" ALWAYS opt in for the socks

I ran out of insulin while on a trip in Israel. Everyone was super apologetic because insulin is one of the few medications you must see a dr. in person to get it and so they couldn't handle it remotely. Didn't cost me a dime.

Anyway, those are the various insurance options I've personally had at various points in my life; I'm sure there are others
110
Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 21h
Except if your ER visits are a percentage instead of a copy, something like 10%. Then you'll owe probably $3-5000, hopefully capped by your yearly deductible to a lower value But if you went to an out of network ER, your coverage may be different, so always check the hospital in an emergency (sigh)
110
Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 21h
Now, that's just the ambulance. The ER visit will be another copay, $100 is typical? The crutches/boot are usually covered by insurance from the visit in my experience, but they will also make you do a follow up visit, which will be another copay of ~$25 with a specialist in feet bones

Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 21h
It varies A LOT My insurance plan, it's fully covered, no cost, if they agree this was a need for urgent medical care; otherwise, they don't cover it at all. If you have no insurance, around $1000 +/- 50%? Some insurance will cover it with a copay($25, $100,etc), or it falls into your deductible

The other time I know I've mentioned before; we all had to write poems in class and I wrote a certified banger called "School is a Jail". The teacher said it was a very nice poem but we're not putting it on the wall for parents' night because we don't want other parents to worry about the school

So we know you just took the test the state makes you take, but we'd like you to take the 5th grade test as well? Not for any state score or anything, don't worry about it, we just want to see where you're at Then they stuck me in a back room and gave me the test and a photocopy of a scantron sheet

Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Hard to answer 'cause I've always just felt weird but my 2 earliest memories from school I went to a private elementary school, but we still took the state end of year (every odd grade) standardized tests. In 3rd grade, the teacher pulled me aside after the usual test and said hey...

Our stories had multiple posts not because the next chapter hadn't been written but because usenet had a character limit and by golly we were going to hit it Then someone would make an accompanying image and you'd grumble "this had better be worth it" as you download 17 posts and fire up uudecode

I think we've all been at this D&D table

Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
To be fair, this has been a big problem for over a decade I worked somewhere that about 25 years ago a small group of the devs quit and started a consulting company, then told the original company "You're going to hire us, because no one else knows how this code works" And they all got raises
010
Steve Haley @niborris.bsky.social · 13/10/2026
Yeah we recently had a case where the devs looked at some logs, said hm maybe we had a deadlock, then punted the whole thing to Claude saying "we suspect a deadlock" it said "yeah this routine is fucked, mate" Then we still had to figure out where this routine came from and fix it, but it helped

It's not all that niche, but in the Netflix series Django, the sheriff mentions he's the sheriff of "Bexar county" and pronounces it Becks-ar; this is the county San Antonio is in and that's a Spanish 'x' - it's pronounced, roughly, as "Bear" I honestly paused the show to yell about it

I was reading through and felt like the government was planning all along to sneak through cutting down trees as "routine maintenance" and then at the end the judge shut that RIGHT DOWN Given this I'm pretty surprised they're trying "it's maintenance work" now
Court transcript
THE COURT: I didn't intend for you all to have to
tell them every time you want to do any routine maintenance.
That's not what I want to have happen. I want you to tell them
basically before things start getting chopped down in a massive
way that's irretrievable and we're basically like we're moving
forward. I want them to have time to come back to me.
MR. ROBERTSON: I understand. Because some routine
maintenance does require a big truck, and I think that's
where --
THE COURT: You just work it out with them. I mean, I
think -- I hope we all understand what I want is I don't want
you all to stop and have to ask permission every time you need
to tear down a fence or bring in a big truck to do something.
I don't want a destroyed East Wing. I don't want a destroyed
reflecting pool or whatever before they are able to come back
to me and ask for relief, okay. That's all I really don't
want. Okay. But I don't want to get in your way. I'm not
going to stop you all from doing anything.
MR. ROBERTSON: Thank you, Your Honor. Perhaps we
were overly cautious.

Everyone out there looking at prior allies discarded on the side of the road, thinking "They were gullible fools! I am more clever and more canny and shall outwit them all!" and then turning around, stepping on a rake, and watching 10 other people stab them as they fall Love that for them

But they had decided they REALLY wanted someone in the MAGA lane in this senate race, and when they got a chance to get someone with name recognition, they jumped on it. Pretty sure any name recognition MAGA candidates are terrible by self-selection at this point.

I can kind of see why some people thought Paxton was viable - he stomped George P Bush in the AG primary in 2022, and then won AG by about the same margin as Abbott did for Governor. But that was before the impeachment (even if he did get acquitted) and they should have seen this coming

It also helps that Trump has absolutely no desire to help shape anyone into a successor, he is hardwired into making sure everyone else is seen as inferior. If he's patting you on the back, he's taping a "Kick Me" sign to you.

Rats are usually pretty relaxed, but we have one that had an instinct to nip at you if you reached for her; apparently it's a genetic trait that you can't train them out of. Once you are holding her she is sweet as can be Tough part of pet rats is they have a pretty short life span

I dunno about that either but Toth has been crushing his state house district over and over again for 30+ points too, and this is largely the same area - the Woodlands is deep, deep red. Seems like the primaries went hard into a MAGA swing but the state as a whole isn't following

And you are teaching them that reading is important enough that you will spend your time on it, and so should they One of the things I did as a new parent was make sure I was doing my own reading time during the day and not just at night before bed - so my kids could see hey, Dad likes reading

My friend had a cat like that - one time I was on the couch and the cat was sleeping on my foot. He woke up, stretched, looked up at me, decided he needed to bite me on my shin *CHOMP* - and then went back to sleep, still on my foot.
