My dad is a software engineer. Every time I ask him how to do something he tells me to install something else. How much of development is just typing brew install into the terminal?

I have a LOT of students that now say they want to be independent or freelance journalists. Part of the reason I am now in higher education full time and freelancing significantly less is that the gig economy is exhausting. In 2024, I wrote 40+ features. Last year it was maybe 10. It’s unsustainable

PRs: Please don't manipulate your email subjects to make us think we asked you about your client or agreed to interview them. We know who we reached out to and replied to and it's a great way to NOT get media coverage.

If you want to give hot takes on how American journalists can do better, go ahead and pull up job postings for media professionals in a smaller American city. 1. What do the positions pay? 2. How many positions are there Then do a Google search for media layoffs. Oh yeah and everyone hates us.

Emailing potential sources for stories right now be like: "Given the continuous unfolding of more newsworthy and important events, could you make time for a Google meet with some nerd who wants to ask questions about robots?"

What's really telling about digital marketing is that to sell website accessibility to CEOs who would rather leave their WordPress sites unattended and open to malicious code than hire a creative, the search engine has to be higher on the priority list than the person needing accessibility

The best thing about teaching a coms course about How to Use The Internet Intelligently is that you might have to scrap half of the content in Chapter 3 of the textbook (Pub date: 2023) for all of the new information that has already made it obsolete.

Some parents in a nearby town were big mad about this being assigned at the high school. So I bought it. And it absolutely wrecked me. First, it had all of the makings of a great dystopian story: surveillance, social robots, an overreaching state. But as a mom, it was just a gut punch. Read it.

My insta video feed is suddenly just OF sex workers and while I respect sex work as a profession (and might even have a pair of clear platform shoes tucked away from days yore), it's not quite the content I'm looking for. Is it an influx from TT or the creators I want to see leaving the platform?

Want to make your syllabus accessible to people using screen readers? Go through the document and tag all the headings. Your very top heading should be "Heading One." Each subheading should be "Heading Two" or below.

I gave two of my classes time in class to do course reviews and ran out of time with the other two. Guess which classes had higher scores? People who are happy won't take the time to fill out a survey. People who are unhappy will tell ten people on average. I learned this from customer service.

Authors, your website is so important. I just read about a book on a major outlet and was going to attempt to reach out to the author or their publicist for a possible Q&A. The website just had a landing page to buy the book, no contact info (not even a form), and no nav menu. I left the site.

I'm updating my web development curriculum for next semester. What should I ABSOLUTELY teach? What can I let go? It's an entry level course for communication students but we get some CS students, too. I want to include more information about designing for mobile, but will that overwhelm them?
