Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I have considered it and that's as far as it goes because I'm not entitled to it :( 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 14/09/2026Every time I arrive at an EU border, I'm reminded how utterly moronic Brexit is and what an absolutely wasteful and destructive idea it was. 120
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 02/08/2026Go to www.edinburghtraveltracker.com and then click on "API Keys" in the footer and fill in the form which pops up. I know that some people had issues when the API first launched with getting their keys after submitting the form. I have no idea if that's fixed now. 010
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 02/08/2026What API are you referencing? Because if you're talking about bus tracker, that's City of Edinburgh Council and Trapeze. And if bus tracker, what do you mean by "new" API keys? 101
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 08/07/2026"Sorry sir - you can't wear a big plastic bin on top of your shoulders in to the chamber. It's against the standing orders of the house." 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 08/07/2026I wonder, if Count Binface wins and takes his seat in the Commons, what happens with regards to the dress code that members of the Commons are supposed to adhere to? 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 19/06/2026I spent some time today playing around with the new Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) platform which has just been made public alongside the release of Android/AAOS 17. The screenshot is SDV Cuttlefish images I built running the SDV solution. I'm looking forward to working more with this. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 26/05/2026I gave a brief interview to Mohsen Mirhoseini about LLMs and the future of software development at KotlinConf last week in Munich, which features in his latest video. Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 13/05/2026If the question is "Should I fly to/from Glasgow airport?", the answer is no. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 11/05/2026While you're down in Leith, take advantage of visiting the Moonwake brewery taproom. And Teuchters Landing pub is well worth a visit. 110
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 01/04/2026Yet, their lust for a neoliberal utopia with low taxes is so great, they are psychologically incapable of reconciling their ideology with the state of the country they caused while they were in government. Cause the mess and blame someone else for it. Great work, guys. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 01/04/2026In appears to me that the Conservatives are engaged in political trolling, whereby they hand over a very shit inheritance to a new government and then they be like "Wow, the country is so broken, isn't it? Who done that?" 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 27/02/2026Increasingly conservatism has become about returning to an imagined rose-tinted past. 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 19/02/2026I've just realised that if Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is charged and it proceeds to court, we'll witness the spectacle of "The Crown vs Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor", which will be prosecuted by a member of the King's Counsel. That has an extra sting to it when the Crown/King is your brother. 010
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 13/02/2026It turns out if you use `build-logic` instead (imported with `includeBuild("build-logic")`) then the classpath issues were no longer issues. Apparently the `buildSrc` classpath is resolved before other plugins in the main project(s) are included. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 13/02/2026While working on @mybusedinburgh.bsky.social this week I encountered an annoying subtle thing with Gradle. I tried to use convention plugins in the `buildSrc` dir. But I kept getting issues with classes not found. So there was clearly some classpath thing happening. 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 06/02/2026Ah but what about just north of Berwick-upon-Tweed on the ECML? :) 140
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 01/02/2026It beats some pretty stiff competition, but I think I can confidently say that Charleroi is the most miserable airport experience I've ever encountered. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 01/02/2026I would describe the queue for security at Charleroi airport as currently constipated. 200

Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 09/01/2026The issues with the Edinburgh bus tracking API over the past few weeks have been a massive pain, but hopefully I can put it behind me now. After a massive effort, I'm glad to get this app update out. Now time for sleep. 130
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Insights (continued); - All main values (consumed, generated, imported and exported) were all marginally up on 2024, with the export kWh being the biggest gain. - Despite export kWh being up, the money earned was down due to @octopus.energy's export rates being less generous since spring 2025. 000
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Insights (continued); - This year, May rather than June was the best month for generation. - The worst month was of course December. 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Insights; - Solar is still way better than no solar. It's the daily standing charge which kills the profitability. - I exported almost double than I imported, so I was by far a net contributor to the grid. 100
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 06/01/2026Total import cost (including standing charge): £437.29 Total import cost (excluding standing charge): £228.36 Total export earned: £310.08 Total cost for electricity for the year (import minus export):£127.21 Theoretical cost if I had no solar, based on average kWh price: £1,077.82 Saving £950.61 100

Reposted by Niall ScottMy Bus Edinburgh @mybusedinburgh.bsky.social · 05/11/2025It took far longer than I hoped, but this morning Google finally approved the update to My Bus Edinburgh which fixes the issue loading bus times. This is now starting to roll out to users. If you don't immediately see the update, please check the Play Store throughout the day. 101
Reposted by Niall ScottMy Bus Edinburgh @mybusedinburgh.bsky.social · 04/11/2025A change was made to Bus Tracker without my prior knowledge which means bus times are not currently working. Fortunately the fix is simple and I am currently publishing a new app update this morning to fix it. I will update here when the update is out. 121
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 30/10/2025Thanks to everyone who came along to my Droidcon London talk. Now it's over, I can relax for the rest of the conference. Here's a link to the slides: docs.google.com/presentation... 070

Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 22/10/2025The biggest threat to the way of life of those who spout "go back to your own country" is that enough people actually do. However, the bigots are usually too stupid to realise this. Study after study shows that on the whole, migrants contribute way more than they take. Show them respect. 030
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 20/10/2025A brand new update for My Bus Edinburgh is rolling out. It's been over 2 years since the last update, so this was long overdue. This is the first release with some features written in Compose. This project started in 2009 while I was at uni, and it's still rolling along. 25.5k active installs! 020
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 17/10/2025So what might appear like a common pattern to you might not appear like a common pattern to others. In my case, this has been because my typical developer workflow has not demanded it. 110
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 17/10/2025I started using them at least 2 years agoon a personal project but not extensively as I did this week due to previous flakiness. I've mostly been doing Android Automotive for the past 2.5 years, so I tend to target a single device, thus not leveraging the full capability of Gradle Managed Devices. 110
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 16/10/2025And by Gradle Managed Devices, I mean this: developer.android.com/studio/test/...developer.android.comScale your tests with Gradle-managed devices | Android Studio | Android DevelopersHow to run automated instrumented tests at scale with Gradle-managed devices. 010
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 16/10/2025I just want to say, I'm using Gradle Managed Devices to run instrumentation tests across groups of virtual devices and it's amazing. Prior to a release, I'm getting very valuable feedback that the tests do indeed pass across many versions of Android. 220
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 13/10/2025Only 2 weeks to go until @droidcon.bsky.social London! I will be presenting the 20 minute lightening session "Dual booting for testing and curiosity with Dynamic System Updates" on the Dalvik Domain stage at 15:30 on October 30th (1st day). 020
Niall Scott @niallscott.bsky.social · 27/09/2025People go on about how long it takes to get through passport control in the EU for British citizens post-Brexit. But somehow it takes even longer to get back into the UK at Edinburgh Airport as a British citizen. 010
