Prof Eugene Finkel: As I was writing my book in summer 2023, I would wake up and hear the news about what Russians are doing in occupied Eastern Ukraine, then read through historical papers of WWI and see the exact same things, to the t, that they did in the occupied Austro-Hungarian territories.

Life is strange. Reality slowly creeps in as I sit on the train - the very last leg of my tour - tired and discombobulated from a 3am fire evacuation. I lived a fantasy, almost AI-generated life for 3 months, but reality is still full of heartbreak, fears, and all the pain of a nation under attack

XOps Conference Madrid - done ✅💃Really enjoyed the "everything-ops" flavour of the event, with a heavy lean towards security. One of the rare conferences where I would go to every single talk! Now just need to become fluent in Spanish for next year 😅

Good morning from Kyiv, Ukraine 🇺🇦 It's 5:23 AM on Friday, August 11. Its my dad's birthday! The train managed to catch up and we're set to arrive almost on time. Quite impressive! I don't know if it's the excitement/nervousness or the jetlag got me, but I didn't sleep much.

Several hours later, I'm still in the passport control queue in #Przemysl. My train is 2,5 hours late 🫣 putting my connection tomorrow morning at risk. The coffee I got to takeaway in Rzeszow has been a delight. Przemysl smells like "#Ukraine ❤️‍🩹 I'm so close yet so far away.

Rzeszów was nice, I had time to pop to the market square and see the Town Hall, as well as to have a decent cup of coffee and a medivnyk cake. Then a 1.5h train took me to Przemysl, where I hoped to get some food and board my very long train to Ukraine 🇺🇦 6/n
