It took a good long while for "good" arcade sticks to become something you could just buy directly off a store shelf; the first really good arcade stick I actually liked using more than a pad was this glorious beast, the Namco Arcade Stick made by Hori.

The Namco Arcade Stick. This one is mostly metal from what I remember, and of decent size for both wrists. It's muted grey in a somewhat darker style than the PS1 plastic but the highlight here are the magnificent bright yellow stick and buttons. Not a single turbo switch to be found! This was a tool for *professionals*.

Unless you were a certified mid 90's gaming pervert who actually imported the stuff like the Hori Fighting Stick!! advertised in the back of Diehard Game Fan this was considered the gold standard arcade stick of the time. I never got to use one of these and only ever saw one on sale in EB once.

The Capcom Fighter Power Stick, a large (even by modern standards) arcade stick with the joystick and buttons slightly split apart and set to the sides like one of those ergonomic keyboards. Very high quality dark grey plastic with yellow and lime green accents and a tasteful purple/grey button layout. A very nice touch is how the stick has a little bump on the side to accommodate the "C" in "Capcom"

I don't even know why my brain pulled up this exact example; when I owned that stick I wasn't clued in enough to know it sucked. I owned both the SNES and Genesis version of this and it was alright.

The Fighter Stick SN; an arcade stick made by Asciiware for the SNES. Better quality than the one above but still the buttons were bad and it wasn't really big enough. This is a darker grey plastic (albeit better quality) and a much less interesting black/grey color scheme to the buttons and switches.

Had a dream where I saw an insanely cool six-button Neo-Geo-style arcade stick online and immediately bought it only to get delivered and it wound up literally being this fucking thing

Arcade Pro joystick for the SNES. It's grey plastic body with admittedly for the time a very nice purple/teal buttons and switches but since we're talking about a mid 90's arcade stick it had the footprint of a malnourished elf and weighed half as much. Also the mushiest, most non-responsive buttons you've ever used. Even the joystick sucked on this guy. Like it's BARELY big enough to hold all six buttons god almighty mass market joysticks used to suck you don't even know

You don't need to use anything crazy; I wound up using the power adapter for my Analogue Pocket. There's some specifications but it just needs to be a 5volt/3amp or 9volt/3amp usb wall wart. You can go crazy and get some heavy duty Anker thing but you don't need to. github.com/Takiiiiiiii/...

One of the things I love about this account is seeing how developers worked around the problem of needing recognizable, fan-favorite cars without paying licensing fees-- or being denied outright due to exclusivity agreements. The MG Special here is clearly intended to be a Ferrari F355.

It has um... whatever this thing is suppose to be. It does have a recognizable version of the FF Chocobo theme during this scene so it's *supposed* to be a Chocobo. But overall it's a motorcycle-themed story which was probably easier to animate.

What appears to be a pink featherless chocobo. Fortunately this affront to god is merely a summoned spirit and vanishes in short order.

Unfortunately it shows back up again toward the end of the OVA

No, for the first couple years it shipped with a digital-only pad which looks somewhat cursed and gangly today. We didn't get the Dual Analog Controller until '97; the first Dual Shock replaced it inside of a year iirc.

The OG PS1 digital pad. It's funny how this looks incomplete now without the twin thumbsticks.

The Sony PSX, maybe the most awkward chonker of a videgame console ever made. Just a big white plastic box the size of a desktop PC with grey trim. One of Sony's attempts to make something look elegant and refined and in the process making it look like nothing at all. I mean, just look at it. You can't! The eye falls off of it before it can record a mental image. It's so bland it warps perception. It's an interdimensional traveler from the Meh Zone.
