When we fight, we win—and get some great press coverage to boot! This week, after trying to break our union by illegally firing and disciplining our members, Condé Nast settled with the NewsGuild.

WE WON

Condé Nast is paying the price for its illegal attempts at busting our union.

Yesterday, in honor of International Workers’ Day, about fifty members and allies of The New Yorker Union and Condé United held a “Dismay Day” rally and leafletting session.

HAPPY DISMAY DAY!
WE WON'T BE SILENT IN THE FACE OF CONDÉ NAST'S UNION BUSTING.
On the eve of May Ist, Condé United and The New Yorker Union are observing "Dismay Day" to hold Condé Nast accountable for its flagrant disregard for just cause and workers dignity.

WHAT HAPPENED?

In November, union members visited the executive suite of One World Trade Center to ask questions about recent layoffs. Condé Nast responded that evening by illegally firing four members, including three union leaders, for "extreme misconduct," without an investigation or any evidence that employees standing in a hallway—in their own office-violated company policy. Condé Nast's actions were an infringement on workers federally protected right to engage in concerted activity, and on our unions' contractual guarantee that there shall be no discipline without just cause.

SO WHAT?

Condé Nast thinks that firing union members will scare us into silence about our working conditions and about the corporate greed that's destroying publications and keeping journalists underpaid.
Since the firings in November, Condé Nast has shuttered Self, sold off them, and decimated Teen Vogue and Glamour, laying off dozens of union members, with queer and trans journalists and journalists of color disproportionately affected.

What Can You Do? Spread the word about Condês union busting. Post a picture of this flyer.

This evening, at the Paris Theater, dozens of New Yorker Union members passed out flyers to hundreds of filmgoers at a première screening of THE NEW YORKER AT 100, a new documentary on Netflix.

SAG-AFTRA stands in solidarity with the Condé United and NewsGuild of New York union members who were retaliated against for questioning the closure of Teen Vogue.

Four Condé Nast staffers were fired and additional union members appear to have been suspended without pay following their participation in a federally protected activity — gathering at their workplace to inquire about the Teen Vogue layoffs.

When institutions that hire journalists infringe on their employee’s right to collective action it calls into question those institutions’ commitment to inquiry and journalistic integrity. It also threatens all unionized journalists and their ability to speak truth to power.

SAG-AFTRA reminds Condé Nast that collective action is a federally protected right. We join in solidarity with journalists as well as our union siblings in demanding the terminated employees be reinstated.

Through these illegal terminations, Condé Nast management is attempting to intimidate and silence our members' advocacy for the courageous cultural and political journalism of Teen Vogue, as well as diverting attention away from the obvious lack of corporate leadership at the company.

Late Wednesday night, Condé Nast’s VP of Labor Relations notified the Guild that the Company was immediately terminating four Condé United leaders for engaging in the protected concerted activity of gathering in their 1 World Trade Center office to demand answers on this week’s abrupt layoffs at multiple brands including WIRED and the consolidation at Teen Vogue.
These egregious terminations are a flagrant breach of the Just Cause terms of our contract and an unprecedented violation of their federally protected rights as union members to participate in a collective action.
Through these illegal terminations, Condé Nast management is attempting to intimidate and silence our members' advocacy for the courageous cultural and political journalism of Teen Vogue, as well as diverting attention away from the obvious lack of corporate leadership at the company.
Condé United members illegally fired are:
Alma Avalle: Writer, digital producer at Bon Appetit; NewsGuild of New York first vice president, trans activist, and union leader
Jake Lahut: Wired senior reporter covering the Trump White House
Jasper Lo: Senior fact checker at The New Yorker and US Army veteran: outgoing first vice chair of The New Yorker Union
Ben Dewey: Videographer at Condé Nast Entertainment, former vice chair of the CNE unit
“Management’s attempt at union-busting, using intimidation and grossly illegal tactics to try to suppress protected union activity, will not stand,” said Susan DeCarava, president of The NewsGuild of New York. “The NewsGuild of New York has zero tolerance for bad bosses who harass, target and disrespect our fellow Guild members. We represent nearly 6,000 media workers across the tri-state area and we stand firmly in solidarity, ready to fight for the rights of our members illegally fired from their jobs at …
