Okay, but then you miss Teele Sq, which is closer in and denser than anything in Arlington.
000
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Arlington Center is the furthest the metro should go. After that, the operating costs aren’t politically sustainable as you have to (1) duplicate Mass. Ave. service and (2) the line length becomes an Issue.

Arlington Center is the furthest the Red or Green Line should go.

newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
Starting over with GLX, and railstituting the 80/87 buses makes more sense: you better balance demand on the Green Line, hit Teele Sq. and Clarendon Hill, and capture the Arlington/Medford Sq. Tufts market.

newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 12/10/2026
The Red Line should stay as is: we don’t need to exacerbate the demand imbalance while having to duplicate service on Mass. Ave. (as Red Line stop spacing is too wide, and would place many folks in Arlington no longer within 400 m of a bus or rail station).

Ran 20 miles today. Hit the wall around mile 14, and somehow pulled it off. It hurts for sure, but glad I did it.

If I want to spend on capex, I’d do something on Northern, which serves a one of the densest, also disproportionately minority communities in Queens and relieves the most overcrowded line in Queens rather than reduce commute times for disproportionately white tourists to go to LGA.

newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 11/10/2026
Just going to ConEd would cost less, and not skip over the median resident (assuming you have to have a yard on the route) of Steinway/Ditmars and Astoria Heights while subjecting the neighborhoods to the disruption of elevated rail.

I personally think a rail yard for the Astoria Line, which helps with eliminating track merges (or deinterlining as people on this app like to call it) is far more important than a one-seat ride from LGA to Midtown. Just extend the N/W to Con Ed, and call it a decade.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I think there are far greater substantive transportation needs than giving wealthy, white tourists a one-seat ride from LGA to Midtown/FiDi — particularly when people’s time budget for tourist travel is bigger than for work, school, errands, medical appointments, visiting friends, recreation, etc.]
000
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
[Fwiw, I’m not crazy about any of the proposals I have seen to give LGA a rail connection. The majority of airport transit riders are airport workers, who tend to live close to the airport, where housing is cheaper.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
Such a mythical crosstown idea — railstituting the M60 — would be primarily about the going to Columbia — not going to the airport — and would almost certainly have to be elevated on the East River to pencil out.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
And it’s harder to envision New Yorkers willing to pay the operating costs of running 10+ tph on Sundays in perpetuity for a pure East-West crosstown route from 125th to LGA that misses a Columbia University and Columbia Hospital — a major market.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I’m just saying because of the 45 degree turn on Amsterdam/125th that the M60 takes (as well as the 90 degree turns to the south), it’s hard to see from an engineering point of view railstituting the full M60 as feasible — particularly with 600 ft BMT trains.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
[Fwiw, the M125 covers the Columbia Business School and S. Bronx Hub, an emerging market based on OnTheMap.]
000
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 10/10/2026
I should add that the M60 serves Columbia and LGA — the former being a major secondary/tertiary market. So I think you likely want to include Columbia on a 125th St crosstown to LGA. Which is hard to do with 600 ft trains and the crazy turns by Columbia.
200
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
And frankly, Uptown needs a lot more than one crosstown line. [Bx19 (145th), Bx36 (University/Tremont), and Bx12 (Fordham) are all good candidates.]
010
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
The M1/M2/M3/M4/M5/M101/M102/M103 indicate there is significant demand for the West Side Lines to East Side Hospitals/Midtown East — likely more than for Uptown to LGA. The bend serves a purpose.

There’s an extant single-ended line whose terminus is Bowdoin, and nearby is one of the densest neighborhoods in Boston is still essentially a rapid transit desert for Roxbury, Mattapan, and Dorchester to piggyback off their frequency.
000
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
Late to the conversation, but while I think branching the Orange Line off the SW Corridor isn’t feasible, I do think Roxbury, Mattapan, and Dorchester should get a Metro Line.
100
newtonmarunner.bsky.social @newtonmarunner.bsky.social · 09/10/2026
I think the MTA, whose job it is to be responsive to the voters’ substantive transit needs and values, wants to give the West Side Lines uptown a faster, more linear ride to the (eastern part of the Upper) East Side hospitals (e.g., Weil); hence, 2nd to 125th.

Pomodoro sauce — how much should the sauce shrink before you say it’s done? I cook Mutti passatta on for 30 mins at 260F, and the sauce is at most 25 percent of the original size.

Honestly, I can’t. Everyone knows shirt and shoes are required to enter a grocery store. Barefoot is a huge liability issue for the store (though flip-flops, slides, and sandals aren’t *that* demonstrably better for safety).

Late to this, but as a Newton resident, it goes without saying that (1) Newton/Brookline will never accept the Blue Line; West Roxbury/Needham will never accept the Orange Line. (2) Newton/Brookline/Chinatown should all be on the same line or at least a x-platform transfer away.

Mainline regional rail is so much harder to do in Boston — and anywhere in the US for that matter — than Europe and Asia just because our commuter rail line lengths are so much longer, our stop spacing is so much wider, and there is far less bidirectional demand than Europe and Asia.

Wide roads, an overly gridded street network, and els are part of the character of Chicago the same way narrow, labyrinthine streets are part of the character of Boston.

Haven’t thought about London in awhile. Are there any major outer bus routes in greater London that have substantial destinations, and could be ALMstituted so folks transfer to the route? Also, is there still a substantive need to prevent folks from getting on/transferring to the Victoria Line?

2. Like other social sciences, the economics major has fewer required courses than the physical sciences. Students can use those electives to take more math courses. There is plenty of time to take an extra semester (or two) of calculus in your junior and senior year if you have PhD aspirations.

1. US Universities clearly don’t agree with you and Alon that the sole purpose of undergraduate economic major program should solely be to prepare students for grad school in economics, & should be only for those w/ econ grad school aspirations. Otherwise, the courses would be officially required.

Universities aren’t going to leave their strongest undergraduate students in their majors unprepared for grad school in that major; it’s against the university’s self-interest to do so.

If the university’s honors program doesn’t require third semester calc and/or linear algebra, then the grad school isn’t going to have those courses as a prerequisite in their six main Econ grad school courses. UVA and UNC certainly don’t.
