Happy Pride Month!!! We know that for many people Pride doesn't look like a parade or a party. For some, it's a quiet moment at home, a chance to reflect, to hold loved ones closer, to think of those who threw the first rocks. Enjoy, however you celebrate. #pride month
A grid of images covered with rainbow filters. The images show a variety of LGBTQ+ moments to represent Pride. These include two women cooking together, people smiling before a Pride flag, two men laughing in close proximity, a gender non-conforming person, a woman sitting alone in nature, a Pride parade, and other moments of queer joy. There is an empty square, greyed out with a Progressive Pride flag heart over it, to represent those who are not able to celebrate Pride outwardly.

The background of the image shows silver stars. Over it, text reads: Why we celebrate Diversity across the social web. Newsmast Foundation. The background of the image shows silver stars. Over it, text reads: Awareness. The Social Web, especially the Fediverse, has a long way to go before it represents the diversity of the real world.

The Social Web is dominated by the Western perspective.

We hope that, by celebrating cultural events and holidays across our Social Web presence, we can highlight the many missing voices in the timeline. The background of the image shows silver stars. Over it, text reads: Education. There are so many cultures and religions on our small planet. We are a species of dreamers and believers.

It’s unfair to presume that a person would be educated on the experiences of others from different countries, cultures, and beliefs. But to welcome diversity to the Social Web, we should make a collective effort to learn.

We’re not experts. Our commuity team are all from the English countryside. We’re not always perfect, but we try to take time to educate ourselves.

We hope that by sharing that knowledge on the Social Web, others may too learn about the experiences of those different to them. Together, we can make this space more welcoming. The background of the image shows silver stars. Over it, text reads: Acceptance. We hope that if someone from a group or culture which is a minority on the Social Web sees one of our posts, they feel a little more at home.

In the past, the culture of the Social Web itself has felt unwelcoming to those marginalised by Western society. This is not acceptable.

The Social Web is a place for everyone who can treat others with respect and decency. It belongs to no one.

We welcome everyone, no matter their culture or religion, and trust that they too will welcome the diverse opinions and voices of the Social Web.
