Be careful out there Seattle! It's #SpiderSeason !! Opening the garage door or turning on the light was especially treacherous this morning 🕷️
A massive spider on the wall of our garage conveniently located immediately next to the light switch and garage door openers. Kinda shocking when not quite awake.

💡 burnt out on a old TC 🔬. Spent 2 hours combing through dusty old rooms + old microscope parts to finally find replacement 6V 20W 💡 fuming that I couldn't do my expt because nobody hordes 💡 anymore thanks to 🔬LEDs. This poem was stuck in my head. For want of a 💡 the experiment was almost lost! 🧫
Poem title: For want of a nail.
Poem text:
For want of a nail the shoe was lost
For want of a shoe the horse was lost
For want of a horse the rider was lost
For want of a rider the message was lost
For want of a message the battle was lost
For want to a battle the kingdom was lost
And all for the want of a horseshow nail.

Late to the cat party. Snuggles (outgoing) and Cuddles (shy + amazing eyebrows) send greetings. They specialize in looking bored+superior & pretend they are rarely tolerant of each other. Further, they don't actually live up to their iconic names very frequently. But they are very well loved.

Restricting visas to 4 years would be yet another way to strangle innovation in science. Please comment TODAY. Average PhD length in biomedicine is 5-6 years in USA. Here is what I just posted. Direct link to add your comment: www.regulations.gov/document/ICE...
International F1 and J1 visa holders are a strategic national asset. They strengthen U.S. economic growth. I am a Professor of Pediatrics at a large public university in the USA. This proposed change would cause severe damage to science and innovation in the USA. PhD students and post-doctoral fellows, who conduct most of the experimental work in research labs across the USA usually spend more than 4 years in these positions. A PhD in biomedical research in the USA typically takes 5 to 6 years to complete. This continuity ensures adequate training in the complexities of current biomedical technologies and also enables these trainees to make significant new discoveries that are translated into better health outcomes for our population and new innovations that drive economic growth. Our labs attract the world's best foreign trainees because of the world-class state of the art research here in the USA. These foreign students and post-docs are not competing with USA citizens. Rather, they add to our research enterprise, enabling faster innovation and progress. Further, many stay here in the USA after completing their training and continue to help push forward science and innovation in our country. Establishing a short 4-year limit to these visas would dramatically reduce productivity our USA research enterprise, with significant negative economic impacts for our nation.

Super grateful for all the utility crews from #PugetSoundEnergy and all others from around the region, including BC and Oregon and elsewhere. We have power again. Yet there are still others without power. Tuesday's storm was astonishing for the amount of wind damage to trees and powerlines.

Adding Saturday morning update: more people got power yesterday and outage patches are thinning. But LOTS in the #Seattle East suburbs still don't have power with new estimates for restoration pushed into next week. We are one house away from power at the edge of 1 patch. Sigh.
