“Was any of it genuine?” Phoenix asks.

Kristoph laughs mirthlessly and inspects his nails. “Would you believe me if it was?”

He looks tired, ashy; his normally bronze complexion is dulled considerably, both from lack of sun and from the prison food he’s forced to subsist on. The prison jumpsuit hangs off his thin frame, its grey color washing him out further. Even his nails, usually strong and shiny, look dry and cracked, flakes of keratin sticking up from the nail beds.

“Can I?” Phoenix frowns. Kristoph flinches, staring at the ground. Like this, he has no fringe to hide behind, no curtain of protection. He grips his sleeves. “I’d like to believe you’re telling me the truth, Kris… but honestly, I don’t know what to think.”

Kristoph’s frown mirrors Phoenix’s own. “I don’t think you still have the privilege of calling me that… Wright.”
