Screenshot from The Guardian reading "New cat species identified for first time in more than a century in Bolivia"

From Wikipedia:
The name "tilcayo" was already used for the species by local communities in the region. Publications on Bolivian fauna predating 2026 associate the term tilcayo with Leopardus tigrinus.

The exact etymology of the term is unknown as it does not seem to be directly related to any Spanish or Quechuan words. According to Nogales-Ascarrunz, "We asked the local people, 'Why do you call it tilcayo?' and they said, 'I don't know! My grandpa called it tilcayo, so I call it tilcayo.'"

Travis/thatislebeaver being turned into a Tilcayo, a new species of "tiger cat" announced today!

Travis is looking at his new tail, his hat is hanging on by one ear, and his shirt is barely hanging onto his shrinking frame. A spotted coat is growing in, and his eyes have turned a brilliant amber!
