Nuggets won in a naming contest partly because it was the name of Denver’s original NBA team, which has no connection to the current Denver Nuggets and disbanded in 1952 before the Denver Rockets arrived in 1967. That original franchise had some pretty silly names. History is pretty cool!

not quite, the Rockets kinda predate the Nuggets, the owner also owned the Ringsby Rocket truck line based Denver and based the entire design around it. The owner eventually sold and the team changed to the Nuggets when they moved from the ABA to the NBA since the NBA already had the Houston Rockets
