Lomax swung hard at his enemy, the machete blade sliding into the dead man’s stomach. He pulled it out, and the undead was unphased as its intestines spilled down to the ground. Lomax followed up with blow after blow, each connecting solidly, but the corpse didn’t care. It stabbed at him with dagger fingers, and he had to parry hurriedly, dancing backward.
The other two corpses continued toward me. The torn mouth was over half a meter long now, and the flesh inside it was changing further as the daeva remade the shell it had taken over. The other monstrosity swung at me, and I chopped in with my knife, slicing the tendons around his elbow before darting back out. The arm flopped to its side, dangling uselessly. The other arm was still going, though, and came close to hitting me with the bone blade. The thing looked razor sharp. The porous appearance of bone had disappeared as it changed into this smooth, almost porcelain weapon.
Their physical presence wasn’t the true threat. I watched the arcane mass of the beast with one eye as I engaged its controlled bodies. Its spectral mass was distorting the energy flowing around me, making it difficult to gather. More tendrils grew from the central emptiness, one extending towards Lomax and another towards myself. I felt it brush against my mind, and it was repulsed by the centuries of discipline and training I had developed. Lomax, however, was not so lucky.
He fell to the ground as if stunned. In my astral vision, the tendril of arcane power stroked against his body, trying to worm its way inside. Lomax’s spirit, a construct that to magical vision seemed to be carved from scintillating crystal, was fighting back even as his body collapsed. He did not have training in this realm of warfare, but the instinctive response of a soul anchored in a body was enough to buy him several minutes.
