In 2023 GLS Bank announced they'd plan a roll-out of GNU Taler, an anonymous digital payment system (NOT a cryptocurrency). Sadly they recently decided to pivot and take a much less active role. But there's news: The Taler project is now forming a new organization for all the finance regulatory […]

Looks like this year's Nintendo hacking talk for #40c3 will be titled "Switch 2 hacking: Forget previous instructions, let me run homebrew" 🫠

So my talk about Wayland, MicroVMs, Vulkan and OSX is now online for everybody, who missed it: media.ccc.de/v/2026-638-of-wayland-… #mrmcd Thanks for the wonderful feedback so far, it seems to have found it's niche. (A second reminder […]

@drakulix I'm guessing you're aware of Unihertz? They seem to be increasingly moving out of the "tiny and unbreakable" niche into the "small and fashionable" area (but then not sure about the bootloader situation, or LOS support for that matter)

RE: floss.social/@LAS/116526337888670065 Heimspiel this Saturday in Berlin: I'm once again speaking about x86-on-ARM emulation! Can't wait to find out in which hilarious way my demo will fail this time 😄 conf.linuxappsummit.org/event/9/con…

In the gist linked above, only step 1 is needs to be changed for other container images to be used. The rest could quite easily be turned into a generic helper. Add a little management interface on top and you end up with something quite close to distrobox :) [5/5]

And that's where Nix comes in: Its dockerTools helper lets us easily fetch any container image, and we can write a cute helper script around bubblewrap that applies the default mounts. The result: `nix develop` fetches the container image and drops you into an ephemeral shell. All the tools are […]

See also jvns.ca/blog/2022/06/28/some-notes-… for a lengthier explanation. It works great, but there is a downside: Manually downloading and extracting the container image, and then finding all the right bubblewrap flags is rather tedious. Particularly if you're juggling […]

Docker images are glorified tar files of a Linux filesystem tree - your tool executables are right there in a usr/bin subdirectory. You can chroot into this tree, but that requires root and prevents access to your other files :( The trick: You can create a pseudo-sandbox with bubblewrap, the […]

💡 moment: You can replace #distrobox with a simple `#nix develop` for SDK and toolchain containers. Instant shell access to the OCI image without requiring Docker/Podman itself! Why bother? It's easy to lose track of all the containers on your system. With Nix, an unused image is just one more […]

So Valve has for a while already been pushing arm64 and FEX-related stuff all over the place including in Proton. However I didn't notice, that the Proton repo literally contains build instructions for ARM64! And I happen to have a great little target device lying around, an android handheld […]

On the more positive side of news, the latest release is finally using native file dialogs instead of GTK ones, so I'll gladly take the trade 🥳

PSA: #Firefox 149 ships a new default style for its private browsing homepage, so the "I don't want change" feels are strong right now. I'm sure they'll iterate over the hilarious 17px border, but for now you can disable the whole thing by toggling browser […] [Original post on mastodon.social]

@mawkler I've used it in the past - sadly its device pairing broke in seemingly random intervals for me, which then required a repair and manual restore of the settings. Really put a dent on the otherwise seamless experience! It's been a while that I last used it though, maybe time to try it again?

@cas @verdre Ah! What makes it nicer than Waydroid? Just more polish courtesy of being part of a commercial product? Naively I would've expected any container approach to be more or less the same, but little do I know :)

@cas @verdre So cool! Now I really regret that I couldn't make it for last BTO 😅 So this is a proper reimpl of the Android APIs without containers? I'm guessing the pratical advantage is reduced RAM/disk use and better startup time? Perhaps better Phosh/shell integration as well?

To preempt the inevitable "well actually" comments, yes here's what's still wrong: * UTD can technically still happen in esoteric configurations (usually layer 8 problems) * Moderation tooling for enforcing community rules is still lacking * Element UX is okay but not great * I'm told push […]

There's also more traction going with big open-source communities (KDE, Fedora, Redox, …) running Matrix spaces for communication nowadays. Of course that doesn't help much if your favorite community is on Discord, but at least Matrix-land does have cool places of its own!

Given the #Discord situation, let me point out that many flaws of #Matrix have been improved over the past 2-3 years: * "Unable to decrypt message" is no longer a thing * Harmful content is caught server-side * Spaces (grouping channels) are now supported on many clients including Element X […]

Not gonna lie: I haven't been as excited about a "new thing in tech" as I am about this recent growth of Mastodon in a looong time. Sure, things right now are chaotic. And we're tearing at the networks we built over the years. It just won't be the same as Twitter. But it's a breath of fresh […]
