I enjoy writing code that generates worlds, and occasionally I get together with friends to make video games.

sqlite is really neat :3 I'm using it to store all my game data, not just character progress but also game elements like cards in the deck and potential outcomes of actions. One fun result of that is I can edit the DB using existing sqlite tools and see the content update live in the game

(Also love all the lore updates you’ve been posting!)

Is the ?? a placeholder for a sprite, or is that part of the game (like some unknowable thing is lurking there?)

I started playing with bearlibterminal recently, it makes me so happy! ASCII graphics but with full control over colors, fonts, and mouse input I've been using it to make a boardgame-inspired space trader
An ascii game running in a terminal window. There's a white star in the center, planets labeled A, B, and @ orbiting it, and a "plot course" menu on the right.

Hope you figure it out 😵‍💫 Is the map generated ahead of time or on the fly?

Nice! Does one screen store the values it generated along its edge so the next screen can fit to them, or is the continuity achieved based on a shared noise function or something?

Also if you switch to dark mode then the map will follow suit :)

It's live! At first the Wasm was sloooow. The map uses 16-bit floats for elevation, but Wasm only supports 32/64-bit floats! So the compiler was emulating 16-bit floats using integer arithmetic, which unsurprisingly is way slower. I switched to 32-bit floats and now it's fast🎉 #zig #wasm #procgen

Omg it actually comes with menacing spikes :,)

Thanks! Briefly it's: 1/ form continents from voronoi cells; 2/ treat each cell as a tectonic plate moving in a random direction, and form mountain ranges wherever two plates collide; 3/ set elevation based on distance to mountain/ocean; 4/ flow all potential rivers and keep only the longest ones

Feeling good about the map generator now :) I updated the color palette, added lakes, and made the whole thing run in a loop so it generates a new map every few seconds. The goal is to run this on my website, so next step is to get it working in Wasm! #procgen #zig

Loving this series :) Btw what tools do you use for pixel art? I've mostly used Piskel in the past but curious what else is out there

A little map generator I wrote this past week. Right now it's on the desktop but eventually I want to compile to Wasm and embed it on my website. This is my first time using Zig for anything other than Playdate, and it's been surprisingly pleasant :)
A map generator program showing the heightmaps of a couple large continents surrounded by several small islandsThe same program showing another output. A few mountain ranges are visible in white, as well as some blue rivers running down to the ocean. And another one, this time the continents are spread further apart

Great talk and very cool demos! When you add in forests as you mentioned, do you think their occurrence would be determined by the CA rules from earlier in terrain formation? It seems like those CA rules give a great starting point (eg the spongy areas might have wetlands or mangroves)

I love the scroll effect on herdling.game it’s neat and unobtrusive (Also very excited for the game itself, I loved Far and Firewatch both!)

👋👋👋 I’ve yet to combine the two directly (past worldgen projects have been C# and OCaml) but I’ve been thinking of making one in Zig so I can run it in the browser via wasm Any Zig libraries you’d recommend for worldgen stuff?

👋 Hi I’m new here. Things I like: procgen, TTRPGs (most recently Root RPG), making games, sketching (poorly), capybaras, raccoons Recently I’ve been working on making a Playdate game using Zig. You fly a blimp through a cave, avoid spikes, and collect treasure #introduction
