Worse than the ‘85 Bears’ destruction of the hapless Tony Eason Patriots? Only people younger than 18 would believe this.

The charter in question happened in 2022 under Biden and without the knowledge of the team (planes are normally put in a pool in the offseason managed by a third party). There are plenty of reasons to root for Seattle. This is not one.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 28/01/2026
This is false. The plane was used in June 2022 (under Biden) to deport aliens to Honduras, not under Trump. That charter was made by the plane’s then 3d party pool charter operator. That operator no longer manages the plane. Being anti-MAGA is laudable. Being reckless with facts is not.

The same two outfielders responded in the 9th. Gotta love baseball!

The Blue Jays can stop that from happening. But I love this young Sox team. They are just getting started!

The Red Sox traded a top-15 hitter and got no immediate help back. That salary relief needs to be spent on quality players, not a couple of Rhys Hoskins types.

Protectionism is the gateway for crony capitalism. Companies will request protection or benefit if that serves shareholders. Large corporations will “bend the knee”, joining media companies, large large firms, and universities. Trump gets more control over board rooms and maintaining power.

Duran is older (28?); his violent playing style is great to watch — but maybe not good for his longevity. I think that is why he has not been signed to an early long term deal. And I agree: he will be moved to center when Anthony is ready.

I would be interested to learn whether the ownership group is led by private equity funds, rather Chisholm the individual. If it’s a fund that owns, it has a limited life and must sell before its life ends. I am sure the NBA has addressed this issue in the past, but this to me is the key question.

That was my initial reaction also. But given their reported emphasis on culture, why would they have brought him in? Josh McDaniels’s brother coached him last year with the Texans, so it’s hard to imagine he would be in Foxboro if he had disrupted the young receiver room in Houston.

Like everyone, I am perplexed by the non-signing of a RH DH. Not a Bregman buyer at this stage of his career (per his numbers), but I would take the deal IF Devers agreed to move off 3B and they adjusted the roster. Otherwise, we will never see the kids, who may not be ready now but will be soon.

It will come. Most needed a break after exhausting themselves last year and being grievously disappointed in the decision. Right now, they are licking their wounds. The wounds will heal, the lessons will be learned, and a new coalition will form around a new candidate in time.

Why Wolf? 1) ensure Wolf has graceful bridge to his next gig b/c of Ron Wolf standing with HoF, 2) fairness—allow him one full off-season to show what he can do, w/o deferring to non-football folk, 3) money—cost of replacements, AND/OR 4) necessity—need his reports and system for the draft. Which?

Krafts want to 1) ensure Wolf has graceful bridge to his next gig b/c of Ron Wolf standing with HoF, 2) fairness—allow him one full off-season to show what he can do, w/o deferring to non-football folk, 3) money—cost of replacements, AND/OR 4) necessity—need his reports and system for the draft?

The Krafts are relieved. Apparently, their post-Brady nightmare is over. Now they will slink behind the curtain and leave Vrabel to the mob. Not so fast. Their many missteps were not minor lapses in judgment, but the actions of cloistered, insecure patriarchs. They have far more work to do.

I have no problem with the punishment. It’s proportionate to the situation in which the interference occurred. If you don’t agree with it, be specific as to why. Expressing outrage and a lifelong band is not enough.

Another rapier sharp column. Network sportscasters used to refer to the “three legs of the stool” in describing the reasons for the dynasty. What a joke. There was only one leg — and a large stone — and always that hand reaching for the mike. Not one good decision since 1999. And they know it.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 08/01/2025
I hope the rumors of the Krafts wanting to quickly conclude this search — despite Robert saying they would speak with anyone that could help the team — are not true. Interview Vrabel on Thursday but keep talking to people. They will learn so much. They have not done this since the 90s.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 07/01/2025
No one who closely followed the team can rationally come to this conclusion. It was not Mayo’s fault he was put in a position to fail. He was promoted without earning the job, and he was not ready. This was on the Krafts, not Mayo. I hope Mayo keeps at it. He will be a good HC one day.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 06/01/2025
He deserves to be fired far more than Mayo did. (Both should go, IMO). His drafts over four seasons — partially or wholly under his control — created the conditions ensuring Mayo would fail. He is more responsible than anyone (other than Kraft) for Mayo’s failure.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
There is no way Vrabel or any other quality HC candidate will take the job with wolf and Company in position
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
I think they will interview Ben Johnson. They must, and they know they must. One of the biggest mistakes they made, as you point out, was not having a real research last year. They will not repeat it.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
No way they have a shot at Vrabel if they don’t clean house. Wolf and co. deserve most of the blame for the state of the Patriots.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
I take no joy in the news, but this was the only decision possible under the circumstances. I am surprised that Kraft was able to put aside his loyalty and pride to make this decision, which clearly needed to be made. Next, Wolf, Groh etc., who have got the team into this mess.

Patriots fire Mayo, per Shefter
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
He has been out of his depth all year. He needs to earn the HC position, not sweet talk his way to it by going to Jerusalem with Bob Kraft. What, exactly, does he do well? His teams were outcoached in almost every game. Give me a reason other than it’s been only one year.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 05/01/2025
Milton was the lone bright spot on this day, a bad day, which I fear will give way to another year of the Krafts burying their heads in the sand. The draft and pro player personnel team is the same as the one that let down Belichick and all of Pats nation, so why are they still here?
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 01/01/2025
I also expect the Patriots to beat the Bills because Mayo needs to show he has the support of the players. They will not have the no 1 pick and that haul of players we so badly need will not happen.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 01/01/2025
If AVP leaves, how should the Patriots think about the offensive philosophy a new OC would bring to Drake Maye’s development? Would a West Coast system that builds upon what Maye has worked with this year be a priority, or is there room for someone with a different philosophy, such as McDaniels?
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 01/01/2025
I cannot say I hope all your predictions are right, but I am close. The thoughts on Mayo are spot on but the rational bet is that Mayo stays because of Kraft’s misplaced loyalty and pride. These are not qualities one typically finds in a successful CEO, but I fear Kraft has little self-awareness.
010
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
We were all angry. Like you, I have been trying to find reasons to support Mayo since his unorthodox promotion, but he lost me after the Arizona game. The learning curve is simply too steep. The Krafts’ loyalty is not admirable when misplaced, and, in this case, an unacceptable risk.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
We haven’t had many hits in the draft since Caserio left, so when two of the few draft wins — White and Douglas — politely and earnestly ask for a coaching upgrade, the Krafts have to listen.
010
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
The 2024 draft was not good enough. But we need to know more about Wolf’s body of work while Bill was making the final call. In particular, who was setting the table for Bill after Nick Caserio left in 2021? There were good picks during this period, but as the current roster shows, most were not.
010
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 29/12/2024
We should do the same. Sit Maye, let’s see Joe Milton fling the ball around. But the game is too important for the coaching staff evaluation, so we will wind up picking in tne top ten.

Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 28/12/2024
@patspulpit.bsky.social They cannot draft, they cannot coach. But, sure, bring the same gang back for another year of being out-smarted in the office and on the field. I knew billionaires were arrogant, but incompetence from misplaced loyalty is pathetic.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 16/12/2024
Kevin D. Is spot on. Mayo’s CEO approach is code for not being involved in coaching. He delegates, then judges the performance, preaching all the while. He is supposed to coach and provide direction in the details. Like running Maye on 3d and inches. The big picture stuff is handled by the owners.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 16/12/2024
“You said it. I didn’t”. With that one line, he destroyed everything he had been saying about accountability. He is the HC. He can’t instruct his OC to run Maye? Is he insecure? Afraid of his mild mannered OC? I have supported him since he was promoted. No longer. What a fraud. He needs to go.
000
Nelson Olie @nelson62.bsky.social · 16/12/2024
The three young receivers are all young and dumb. Each of them. Boutte should not be saying anything at all. What the hell has happened to the Patriots? Where is the leadership in the locker room? What culture is Mayo creating? Everybody is throwing each other under the bus except for Drake Maye.

From an ownership perspective, the time is right because the pipeline of prospects is strong, at all levels. Moving to a Tampa base model with an overlay of free agent signings. Finding the right balance of promotions, trades, and FA signings — that is what makes this offseason so fascinating.
