This is a decent ratio of the Head of Instagram but I can’t help but feel it should be even higher. Less Meta AI for those of us who keep using the free version? Don’t threaten *me* with a good time.
Head of Instagram Adam Mosseri tweets that a new subscription service will allow people who pay for Meta products to access their full range of AI product products. Neil sarcastically responds that this sounds like an incentive to keep using the free product.

I rewrote the headline to this column by a “MAGA-lite” Republican who can’t get dates to make it more accurate:

I’m less concerned by the existence of an “AI actor” than I am with the msm’s insistence that Tilly Norwood deserves to be treated as anything other than a bad joke.

My only problem with Vozinha is that he makes me believe that I, too, can move like that on the field at my age. Spoiler: I cannot. Only pain and tears lie here.

Just a reminder that cis women - and especially women of color - will be the target of the majority of sports transvestigations. Transphobia is, and always has been, a close sibling of misogyny. And transphobes will use ‘fairness in sports’ as an excuse to police the femininity of *all* women.

An unexpected side-effect of parenting my music-obsessed toddler? The cartoonishly enthusiastic Australian accent that’s now become a small piece of my personality.

@neilshyminsky.bsky.social provides excellent comentary on cops abusing power, being creepy fucks, and covering up the crimes of other cops. While we deserve better, we can't expect better, because All Cops Are Bastards! #ACAB #1312 #defundthepolice #cdnpoli youtube.com/shorts/su0mO...

If I had a nickel for every tv show where Hamish Linklater played the recently returned leader of a fictional, down-on-its-luck island village in New England who made a deal with an evil creature to gain supernatural power that he believed would save the town, I’d have two nickels.

I caught a mouse (in a catch and release trap!) after being quoted $600 for a rodent removal service and we’ve seen no more mice since. If I know my math, this basically means I made $600 (minus the cost of the trap) and can now spend it however I want, right?

Anyway, this is the public college system I work in! And I’m tremendously lucky to be at one of the very small handful of schools that committed to stop growing in order to avoid being dependent on international students - and saved some of the money. /6

All of which is to say, the mismanagement started at the top with the same people who are now taking over. Which also means we have no reason to expect the management will get any better. /5

But the provincial government also set them up to fail and did zero to dissuade them from pursuing this. Worse, there’s a strong case to be made that they encouraged it through chronic underfunding and freezing tuition. What other options were there? /4

Was it mismanaged? Yes, definitely. Its whole business model was predatory and incredibly fragile - the introduction of any new limits on immigration would be catastrophic, much less the severe restrictions we’ve seen. They should’ve been prepared. /3

And then the federal government introduced sudden and dramatic limits, driving the new student numbers down more than 75% (last time I checked, anyway). /2

The government of Ontario just took over a college because of ‘serious mismanagement’. Conestoga was (in)famous for recruiting (and exploiting) international students more aggressively than any other public college in the country, peaking at 3 international for every 1 domestic student. /1

A mini-rant against mindset coaches: All this framing does is reveal the hustle bro mindset. He’s provided only 2 options & already rendered a judgement against people who choose the latter. This isn’t some grand insight into how people respond, it’s a heuristic for INTERPRETING how people respond.

One of the things no one tells you about running an influencer side-gig is that at least 1 morning every week is eaten up reading & writing emails, entering data into spreadsheets, completing & submitting invoices, and also reading, signing, & submitting contracts. Because paperwork is inescapable.

So you bemoan the lack of men’s voice in our contemporary literature - while also failing to mention that men don’t buy or read books, and they could be a factor? And complain that ‘Canadian’ culture - by which you obviously mean ‘white, male, settler’ - is being lost? Just fuck right off. /5

And I realize that we can’t choose the exact moment that a book, which was presumably in the works for years, will be released… But this is when you choose to vilify DEI? When white supremacy and white nationalism is gaining traction everywhere? When violent xenophobia is increasingly normal? /4

Or that books about Canada will not be funded or published if they lack a certain number of POC. (When I edited a book about Canadian culture, the only note we were given from the publisher was that we must have a chapter on hockey.) /3

Also? I spotted multiple factual errors in the column (actually a book excerpt) on my first read. And not just small things. Like claims that a white journalist, Wendy Mesley, was fired for simply reading a book title. (Someone who was present on the call reported that she said the n-word.) /2

I allow the conversation about ‘common sense’ in my communication classes to come up organically (it always does) because it’s the best way to look at how its appearance conceals a bias. Sometimes it’s not conscious? But just as often it’s actively weaponized to reframe bias as undeniable truth.

Got a diagnosis of a type IV allergic reaction, which prompted a joke about how I ‘look like [i’ve] been poisoned’. The cause is still a mystery, though, because it wasn’t poison ivy. So that’s fun.
