Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 19h39 over Kenfig Pool yesterday is the biggest flock since the irruption in 2021 so yes they are on the move in bigger numbers though yet to get anywhere bear the numbers we had then. 151
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Gorgeous birds Clive - this one was at Lee Point. 010
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 07/10/2026It was very quiet at Kenfig Pool this morning so I came home and looked at photos from Australia back in 2022. We saw quite a lot of Forest Kingfishers in and around Darwin with this one for me being the best of them all!! #birdingaustralia #birdphotography #kingfishers 1191
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 05/10/2026It's always a pleasure seeing a Yellow-browed Warbler, especially when its on your patch and the first of the year. It didn't show for very long in the drizzle and didn't call either, so I'm pleased to have been in the right place at the right time this morning #birdingWales #UKbirding #warblers 0661
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 29/09/2026Cheers Rhos - took a while but got there in the end!! 000
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 29/09/2026After missing it by two very close calls yesterday, I was delighted to refind the Pectoral Sandpiper at Kenfig Pool today after a three hour search... Happily, the bird though very wary, showed beautifully at times before flying off high to the east #birdingWales #UKbirding #shorebirds #birds 2567
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 28/09/2026Happy to finally add Garganey to my Kenfig NNR year list today after the first spring for many years without one. Inititally very distant with 14 Eurasian Wigeon, it eventuaally came close enough for a shot #birdingWales #UKbirding #birds #wildfowl #birdphotography 1430
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 27/09/2026A brief visit to Kenfig Pool today saw a couple of Bar-tailed Godwits drop in before the rain but they soon moved on #birdingWales #UKbirding #birds #shorebirds #birdphotpgraphy 1341
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 25/09/2026Glad you got it Bernie and nice to see you mate 👍 000
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 23/09/2026Thats whole of reserve though Peter except Sker. Certainly the highest number of singing males I’ve ever had there. 110
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Interesting… Colin not trapped one for around a week too. It seems to have been an exceptional year for them. During solo spring surveys I counted 141 singing males but so hard to cover the whole site and probably a conservative number. Plenty of juveniles too post breeding 👍 130
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Quite a late one Peter - not seen any on the reserve for over a week now… 100
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 22/09/2026It was nice to see the first Song Thrushes of the autumn arriving both at Sker and Kenfig Pool. Just small numbers today, but there were plenty of "ticking" Robins from the bushes, a few Eurasian Jays moving & a showy Whinchat which made for an autumnal feel to proceedings #birdingWales #UKbirding 0381
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Thanks Prof - I was chuffed for Colin especially!! Two amazing species ringed on site in less than two weeks - still lots of the autumn to go yet too… 030
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Great news Bernie!! Really pleased it showed after it was released though personally I only got a brief glimpse of it then! 020
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Thanks Chris - well chuffed , two county records and I've found both of them!! 020
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Stunner - ringed by Colin Baker. Hope its the start of something again here... 020
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 20/09/2026This wholly unexpected Red-eyed Vireo was trapped and ringed at Kenfig Pool this morning and is the seocnd record for Glamorgan and the reserve recording area. I had the shock of my life when I saw it staring back at me from the net. Seen by 20+ observers upon release #birdingWales #UKbirding 917215
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Such a confused picture I agree!! Your illustrations are bang on the money Steph - are they for a new book? 120
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Aren’t the winter grey and white birds fulvecens which is the westernmost cline of tristis? Some are very Bonelli’s like. 110
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 16/09/2026I had already left when this Arctic Tern arrived at Kenfig Pool yesterday, so was hoping it would stay around until today. It was a new bird for the reserve year list so I was delighted to see it still present this morning. This moment was the only time I saw it land #birdingWales #UKbirding #birds 0461
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 13/09/2026Ruddy Duck was a species I always looked forward to seeing during the winter at Kenfig Pool. Its been 15 years since my last record there due to the cull of the species, but I enjoyed seeing them again in Canada during a spring visit in 2024 #Birds #BirdingCanada #wildfowl #Birdphotography 0191
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Thanks very much but I didn’t find it - it was trapped for ringing on site and I was lucky enough to be there 👍 110
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Judging by its weight it probably arrived a few days ago, but I imagine many leave in August. 110
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 10/09/2026Hahaha - don't worry - you were m,entioned in dispatches yesterday 😂 110
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 10/09/2026I very rarely post shots of birds in the hand, but I have to make an exception for this gorgeous Co mmon NIghtingale trapped at Kenfig Pool yesterday morning; my first for the site & the first there for 33 years!! #birdingWales #UKbirding #birds 3672
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 08/09/2026I wasn't able to get a photo of yesterday's Osprey at Kenfig Pool, so here is one taken in Salalah, Oman in November 2024 where it was a lot sunnier and less windy... #birds #birdphotography #raptors 1111
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Yes they are nowhere near the numbers of the 89s and 90s. Thank you - I hope so too! 100
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Kenfig NNR seems to have missed out on the recent arrivals of Pied and Spotted Flycatchers. Pied is very hit or miss anyway, but we usually get a few Spotted over the autumn, but so far this autumn there have been very few so it was nice to catch up with this bird yesterday #birdingWales #UKbirding 2354
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 03/09/2026A bit of a dreary day that needed a splash of sunshine so here is a Rainbow Bee-eater froom Lee Point, Darwin, NT Australia in September 2022 #Birds #BirdingAustralia #BirdPhotography #Bee-eaters 071
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 31/08/2026Red Knot is one the shorebirds I enjoy seeing most when they return to our coastline. There is a much bigger flock nearby on Gower, but you never get as close to them as the ones at Sker - there were seven present yesterday #birdingWales #UKbirding #shorebirds #birdphotography 0322
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 30/08/2026The Church Green on Red Johnny Thunders & Heartbreakers Thin Lizzy Psychadelic Furs Iggy Pop Lou Reed Joy Division The Cure Plus many more and soon to add Gift to that list which I’m looking forward to enormously 020
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 28/08/2026The bushes at Kenfig Pool have been a bit quiet this past week, but it was nice to see this Garden Warbler that dropped in during a shower yesterday morning #birdingWales #UKbirding #warblers #birdphotography 0397
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 25/08/2026The gusty north easterly at Kenfig Pool brought in another juvenile Little Ringed Plover with both birds present together, and another Common Greenshank in what has been a good year for them. Seven Northern Shovelers and a female Northern Pintail were the best of the rest #birdingWales #UKbirding 0372
Neil Donaghy @neild1962.bsky.social · 24/08/2026We are slightly past the peak for juveniles passing through here but agree it does feel like a second arrival. 010
