I was told the story by someone but it’s escaped me now. Local legend record dealer near me adores that record. Never seen one for sale until I saw it at his table at a fair a few years back. He was shocked I knew the record.

💯. Amazing it took SOOOOO long to do it too. Phillipps talked about it for decades before actually finding a way to fix it all.

Much more in the book, but I think The Chills story is unique. If things had gone differently I think they would have made a debut LP earlier, in 1984 or '85. But bad luck, mistakes and the people involved led to Brave Words being the first LP. Clean is different, they broke up early and suddenly.

Lots to say but hard to sum up here. 1. Yes, QEIII grant helped subsidized debut recordings of singles and EPs in NZ. 2. Bands and Flying Nun could affords singles/EPs, less so LPs in the early days. 3. NZ chart system meant you could crack it with a single/EP, but much harder with an LP

Wallflowers at the height of their first album buzz in Seattle opening for local/heavier/louder bands. No one was there to see them. Middle of August and it was sweltering. Security handed out popsicles before their set. Big mistake. Lots of frozen projectiles & a band desperate to get off stage.

🧵So in the course of a discussion about Ye Olde Days with some music friends, I dived down a rabbit hole and found something interesting. I've always wondered about the story behind DMA, the dodgy psychedelic amphetamine that inspired the Androidss' 'DMA' and, more notably, The Clean's 'Tally Ho!'.

A cornerstone of two knock out groups, Brent’s fingerprints are also over so many important releases as an engineer & producer:The Skeptics, Terminals, Snapper, The Bats on and on it goes. I've resisted posting about the Jays, because who cares what I think. But the day after the most devastating loss i've ever witnessed, I feel the need. No team brought Canada together like the 2025 Blue Jays. Today sucks but this season was all you could ask for from sports. Baseball is the best.

Another John Peel estate auction came and went this week. One lot of note was his copy of Fall In A Hole, the legendary live album released on Flying Nun that fundamentally changed the label, both crippling it in the short term and helping to propel it to new ears around the world in the long term.

I was laughing as I listened. To not mention Bo at all was egregious and they clearly had no understanding of the lineup beyond the top guys. Felt like they wanted to spend more time dumping on the Brewers than preview the World Series.
