I did a science:
Cricket, frozen, in a plastic vial.

This is a figure from a text book. This was not produced with "AI" (predates it). The book's author, editor, and copy editor all were okay with this. (you may have to click on the thumbnail to see the problem)
Text book representation of exponential and logistic population growth, pay particular attention to the rightmost part of the logistic curve.

(utterly irrelevant but I grew up near Joshua Tree NP and went up several times a year from when I was about 10 to 18. It's one of my favorite places so I always enjoy seeing your posts on Joshua trees. Sadly, I haven't been back in over 20 years)
Green travel coffee mug with an image of a Joshua tree and text saying "Joshua Tree". Currently on my desk.

Sticking with the classics this weekend… but, also, maybe they forgot?

Last but not least, @sekharma.bsky.social presented a poster on the influence of taxonomic bias on behavioral meta-analyses. Sekhar won the Founders Memorial Poster Award! Huge congratulations to Sekhar!!! You can also learn more about this work here: bsky.app/profile/nedd... #ABS2025

My NDSU colleague Erin Gillam @batsrkul.bsky.social and I presented a poster on "How well we explain behavior", looking at R^2 in behavioral research. This has been a fun but exhausting project, hopefully we're able to finish one day! #ABS2025

Zach estimated behavioral variation in inbred & outbred crickets, testing whether our understanding of behavioral individuality/CID/personality needs revisiting given findings in parthenogenic species. Paper hopefully coming soon! Zach is also joining the lab as a PhD student this fall! #ABS2025

Wonderful #ABS2025 meeting! Great to see really exciting science & catch up with great people. Four members of the lab came to the meeting this year: one new attendee (Zach Sweep), two-time attendee (Katy Takumi), many-time attendee (MA Sekhar), and me. We all had a great time, thank you ABS!

I have a PhD position open to start fall semester 2025! The position will include investigations of the structure of both phenotypic (behavioral) plasticity and genetic variation in behavior as well as lots of opportunity to develop your own project. #Evolution #evobio #evolsky #Ecology 🧪
Flier for PhD position. Text with a lab logo at the bottom with a cricket silhouette of a cricket with antenna that look like normal curves. Also has a picture of a cricket (Acheta domesticus) on a white background.
Text:
Crickets! Behavior!
Genetics! Statistics!

The Dochtermann Lab in the Department of Biological Sciences at North Dakota State University is seeking to fill a PhD assistantship examining how selection has shaped phenotypic plasticity and patterns of genetic variance.
The position will start Fall Semester 2025 and the
incoming student will be joining a dynamic department (www.ndsu.edu/biology) and an interdisciplinary graduate program that provides a broad foundation for success (www.ndsu.edu/ecs).

For more information about the lab visit www.neddochtermann.com

I don’t celebrate most holidays. Today is usually an exception. After last week, today has less cause for celebration than most years. Nonetheless, happy Sherman Day.
Meme of General Sherman with an American flag in the background. In the reflection of Sherman’s mirrored sunglasses you can see a burning confederate flag.

The text says: “Remember, remember the 15th of November and Sherman’s March to the sea. I can think of no reason the banner f treason should fly off n the land of the free.”

Orange guy isn’t with us anymore but tabby is (LucyFur). Current cohabitation is much more tense but maybe improving.
Two cats discontentedly sharing a platform. Tabby, named LucyFur, is trying to scoot the gray kitten with a grumpy expression(Roxy) off the platform.

Haven't seen accidental_aRT here but this turned out nicely:
What was supposed to be a simple line graph but ended up as a single line woven together to generate crossing and curves.

Importantly, the structure of published Gs *did not* match the structure of G for populations evolving on Gaussian landscapes. Nor did published Gs match those seen under drift. Instead, published Gs were consistent with populations that had evolved on holey landscapes (HLs). (2/10)
Modified “Orchard plot” of lambda2/ lambda1 values for simulated (above solid line) and observed G matrices. Simulated populations evolving on holey landscapes had lower ratios than those evolving on other landscapes and closely matched observed estimates.

I was asked for a *recent* headshot. Sorry, that goes against the rules.
