A recent study from Sweden adds to the growing body of evidence. The study found that supplementation with probiotics in premature infants was associated with a lower risk of death and/or NEC compared with those who didn’t receive the probiotics.

NEC often affects more than the gut. Babies who develop NEC are at high risk for acute kidney injury (AKI). Medications, inflammation, and altered blood flow that occur when NEC develops can have detrimental effects on the kidneys, causing AKI and potentially chronic kidney disease.

❤️Meet Leyden❤️ Leyden was born at 39 weeks with a “relatively simple” CHD. Leyden’s parents were told she had a 97% chance of survival and not to worry. 4 months later, Leyden’s family was blindsided when she tragically passed away from necrotizing enterocolitis.

With heart babies, as well as all premature and medically fragile infant, mother’s own milk offers the best protection against NEC. When mother’s own milk is not available, pasteurized donor milk offers the next best protection.
