To reconstruct this building with only the original frontage would be reductive and insulting. Without the experience of entering the interior of the original building, you would fail to realise the full magic of Rennie Mackintosh’s vision; his first commission and finest work.

I chose to draw the west elevation of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s art school rather than the more recognisable front entrance because The Mack was more than just an entrance. Each elevation was unique; refined and as considered as the well-known entrance of the art school (cont)

I’m working on a body of work called “Lost Buildings”. Buildings based around Glasgow which have either been demolished or removed. Architecture in memory. Hopefully this will act as a document of what this building once looked like.

It’s the 60th anniversary of Glasgow Airport and I’ve illustrated the original design by Basil Spence. Completed in 1966 with distinctive concrete arches which can still be seen from the interior of the current airport. Have a look up at the roof the next time you’re checking in ✈️
