For more than 9 years it's been the law of the land to provide gender affirming care to incarcerated people, and now that policy has come to an end because of a federal court ruling. This is incredibly harmful because we know gender affirming care is literally life saving.

Violent crime rates are falling in the Triangle area - this is good news. Raleigh and Durham data doesn't show why yet, but we will always advocate for restorative justice practices - Durham and now Raleigh have crisis response units, which is a step in the right direction.

Reforms to the carceral system are supposedly going to make life easier for incarcerated people but in California, it hasn't really changed much. Parole boards make you demonstrate that you've genuinely changed for good as a person in order to re-enter society. But sometimes that isn't enough.

The Department of Homeland Security prohibits chokeholds and other neck restraints "unless deadly force is authorized". Apparently this doesn't apply to ICE.

Of the first things that immigrant advocates have said is "Do not open the door unless they have a warrant", and now that is no longer an option. ICE is now allowed to enter your home based on an administrative warrant that gives them the authority to arrest someone with a final order of removal.

Justine Paul spent 7 years incarcerated, for a crime he didn't commit, before the case was finally dropped in 2022. That's right, 7 years. And he never got a trial. This is why speedy trials are so necessary, to prevent cases like Justine's from happening.
