Whether it’s a painting, a photograph, or a video, we tend to crop the world into rectangles. Then we ascribe meaning and value to that rectangle, setting it apart from what lies outside the frame. That seems a little cruel. If we at least cropped it into a circle, it might be just a little kinder.

I ate a lot of salty foods at the music festival. They were really delicious.

The osmanthus trees had started to bloom, but I couldn’t smell them. Maybe it’s because of my hay fever—sometimes I can smell things very strongly, and other times I can’t detect any scent at all—so I sometimes worry that I might be giving off some kind of strange odor myself.

The final version of my cat's photo book has arrived, and I'm patting myself on the back.

When I looked up at the sky, the blue was deeper than I expected, and I wondered if that was really the color of an autumn sky. It looks like it’s going to be another nice day, and I’d love to go for a run, but I have a mountain of work to do.

I've been walking around the classroom during my classes at vocational school, so my muscles are a little sore.

October 2 is the “Cats and Humans Sanma Day,” but I missed the date and ended up celebrating four days late. It all started three years ago, when I fed my cat that was on the verge of death, thinking it would be its last meal. Any meal could turn out to be an our last.

I had a hard time finding any Pacific saury, so I ended up celebrating Pacific Saury Day four days late.

It’s been raining a lot lately, but it looks like it’s finally going to clear up starting today. It’s getting colder, and my asthma symptoms have started to flare up. My blood pressure also goes up when it’s cold.

The screen protector on my iPhone 13 mini got a little chipped, so I bought two new ones. They might become hard to find.

Ultimately, whether our efforts pay off comes down to luck. We can’t control luck, but if we understand that it’s ultimately a matter of luck, we can control ourselves. People who refuse to acknowledge luck spend all their time searching for “secret techniques” and end up missing out on luck.

My cat seems to be the type that grooms itself very thoroughly, so its coat is always shiny and sleek. Even though I’m the only one who gets to see it, no matter how clean it gets, I wonder what it’s thinking.

October starts today, and the end of the year is starting to loom on the horizon. Classes for the second semester start next week, so I want to make sure I stay healthy.

As I looked up at the sky, even the clouds began to look like four-leaf clovers. I’m about to reach 1,000 four-leaf clover mailings. Since there’s no end in sight, I’m starting to think it might be time to call it quits.

I looked up at the apartment building under construction, thinking it looked like a evil castle. But truly evil things don’t always look evil. Maybe it’s time to update my image of what “evil” looks like.

When you think of a cushion, you probably picture a puffy bag, but what really makes it a cushion is the stuffing inside. When I work as an artist, I often feel as if someone else is taking credit for my work. But that’s fine with me—I don’t want to be in the spotlight anyway.

Three years ago today, I found a kitten on the brink of death. I put together a photo book featuring text and lots of photos documenting the month it took for the kitten to recover. It brought back memories of those days when it wasn’t a given that he would make it through to the next morning.

I don’t play video games at all, but there was a time when I used to play Tetris, so whenever I see something that looks like Tetris, I can’t help but react. I wonder how this world looks to people who play video games a lot.

I thought things seemed a little off, but it turns out there were a few public holidays over the past few days. I was thinking of lounging around in the park if the weather was nice, but it rained and the ground is wet, so I’ll get some work done today and take another day off soon.

The winds were strong due to the typhoon. Even so, there have been so many disasters lately. It’s dangerous near rivers. It’s dangerous near mountains. It’s dangerous near the ocean. It’s dangerous in the city, and it’s dangerous in the countryside.

There are some things that are easier to see when you look at them out of focus, rather than focusing on them. For example, that’s how I look for four-leaf clovers. If the ability to see things clearly is called “vision,” what should we call the ability to see things out of focus?

The meaning behind a seven-leaf clover is “infinite happiness.” The odds of finding one are 1 in 250 million, but I manage to find at least one every year. Since the odds of winning the first prize in the Jumbo Lottery are apparently 1 in 20 million at most, if I run out of money, I’ll buy a ticket.

There’s a stray cat living in my neighborhood. It has the same tabby pattern as my cat, but its expression is completely different—its face radiates the pride of a cat that lives on the streets. Just as with humans, I suppose every cat has its own unique idea of happiness.

I stopped by a bar to kill some time. They said the straw-grilled salmon could be served with ponzu or salt, but the lemon that came with it was plenty. I could detect a subtle saltiness in the wakame. Thanks to cutting back on salt, my sense of taste is getting back on track.

When I measure my blood pressure, I try to breathe naturally, but the more I try, the harder it becomes to breathe naturally. Apparently, this is called the Centipede Effect. It seems to originate from a fable about a centipede that, when asked how to move its legs, was unable to walk.
