And it’s such a ride! “Coaster” merch design for Ghost. I got a bunch of these so I’m trying to pepper them in. After my annual trip to Horror Nights Orlando I was inspired by all the wacky theme park shirts in the gift shops, on top of being a lifelong RCT head. 2022, digital.

“Spitalfields Nemesis,” my second design for Ghost that was released alongside the MOAC cover in 2022. Based on Impera’s finale track “Respite on the Spitalfields,” this piece was a tribute to John Tenniel’s 1888 editorial illustration portraying Jack the Ripper. 2022, mixed media & digital.

One of my biggest inspos that fed into my mixed media process. Although a bit different in how we do it, I can absolutely pinpoint specifically Grady’s work giving me the push to incorporate the monoprint technique into illustration years ago. Nobody does it like him, a real master of the form 🔥

Thank you! It’s sort of a combination of the two. I took a class once that had a monoprint workshop, but I didn’t implement it into illustration till much later. It took a couple years of experimenting to make it practical for commission work because it could be so unpredictable!

Definitely. That’s why I almost always list the medium as mixed media & digital, because the digital portion enhances the artwork enough to list it as a used material. Nowadays I do all my merch designs digitally though, this piece was a rare exception. Mixed media is reserved for covers and such! 🔥

It depends! Something like this was not very compicated, so maybe only about 10 layers total. But something like the Vile Luxury cover was probably close to 50. Sounds like a lot but you have to do them super fast so the paint doesn’t dry, so even the heftier prints never take more than a day.

Most monoprint I see is done with oil-based inks, but I prefer acrylics because of how unpredictable they are. It leaves me with more randomness to keep the unfinished areas spontaneous. I like how even though I follow the drawing, I can’t fully control it therefore leaving room to improvise!
