My piece in @josimarfootball.bsky.social on what explains the UAE's aggressive legal strategy in the Manchester City case. It's what they do and they have consistently gotten away with it. josimarfootball.com/2026/10/05/m...

A further impact of the Manchester City case is that an entire generation of young Mancunians are going to grow up not knowing the meaning of the word "irrefutable".

7. After the serious violence in Amsterdam in November 2024, which was clearly instigated by Maccabi Tel Aviv supporters, UEFA said they would investigate. They didn't. @fairsqprojects.bsky.social wrote to them and asked them to investigate. They didn't reply. fairsq.org/wp-content/u...

3. Here is the UEFA disciplinary code from 2026. Note Article 14(2) and Article 14 (3) in particular. And note there's nothing about racism having to be reported on the pitch in order for an investigation to take place. Because that would be absurd.

2. This is how @rte.ie reported the incident after Adam Idah was allegedly subjected to monkey chants against Israel. (Others reported it similarly.) UEFA said no action could be taken because it wasn't reported on the pitch. This is a gross misrepresentation of UEFA's rules on tackling racism.

The Manchester City case has to be the moment we revisit the issue of state ownership of football clubs, and demand they be banned and phased out. In 2023 @fairsqprojects.bsky.social wrote to the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport making this argument. fairsq.org/fairsquare-c...

The BBC's investigations into rampant violence and racism in Glasgow, which they say has led to parts of the city becoming a "no-go" area, contain some revelations that should really come with a content warning. And the context warning should be : "sensationalist bullshit"

Infantino is the symptom, not the cause, of the problems in football governance. Nasser Al-Khelaifi is also a symptom of these problems. The solution is structural reform enforced by regulation, not a new leader from within.

Elon Musk is an evil racist. Anyone still on X who is opposed to white nationalism and fascism is propping up his empire. There's no excuse for it. We need a dedicated X-shaming website to drive an exodus. I'd contribute to make that happen, sure many others would too.

13. And then - having said all this - it says the IFA has to pay a small fine and hang up some "football unites the world" flags. There is inexplicable incongruity between the Committee's conclusions and the sanctions ultimately imposed.
1115
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
12. With regard to sanctions, the Committee states that "the breaches committed by the IFA are of such gravity and seriousness as to merit severe and exemplary sanctions."
161
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
11. Committee says "the IFA has become institutionally complicit in a system that violates the core values of the game" ...and has damaged "the moral authority of football as a tool for social cohesion and intercultural dialogue"
170
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
10. FIFA Committee says that IFA "has brought the sport of football into disrepute" and "tarnished the reputation of football in the region and beyond"
160
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
9. The Committee rubbishes the notion that the issue is too politically complex to be adjudicated.
160
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
8. The Committee refers to " a pattern of systemic exclusion of Palestinians from football stadiums and facilities located in Israeli settlements in the West Bank, .. These areas are subject to a regime of movement restrictions that disproportionately and discriminatorily affect Palestinians."
150
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
7. "The IFA’s failure to respond to the public dissemination of political and militaristic messaging by the CEO of the Israeli Professional Football Leagues and by FC Maccabi Netanya further compounds its breach" says the Committee.
150
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
6. The IFA has "failed to take meaningful action against Beitar Jerusalem FC—a club whose supporters have engaged in persistent and well-documented racist behaviour" and has sent "a message of institutional tolerance rather than deterrence"
150
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
5. Committee finds IFA "has failed to observe its obligations under the FDC and the FIFA Statutes, consisting of a failure to take meaningful and transparent action against discriminatory conduct, its tolerance of politicized and militaristic messaging within football contexts"
160
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
4. I will leave it to sports law experts to pore over the technicalities and just post some of its conclusions and findings. It starts with a common sense and principled explanation of how political neutrality intersects with FIFA's statutory and human rights obligations.
160
Nick McGeehan @ncgeehan.bsky.social · 20/03/2026
2. The Committee passed its decision on 1 August 2025. So the first question for FIFA is why is it only being released 7 and a half months later, given the gravity of the issues it addresses. As we will see, this may result to its scathing criticism of the IFA's response to racism.

Staggered at how bad this article is. The only reference to the US and Israeli attack on Iran being illegal (therefore a serious international crime) is from a direct quote from @zackpolanski.bsky.social which Rifkind lampoons. The right-wing echo chamber is fed by deeply unserious people.

It's ten years to the day since Gianni Infantino was elected FIFA President. He has turned FIFA from merely a bad actor into a profoundly dangerous one. A rogue President of a dysfunctional organisation.

3/ On top of taking ALL the revenue, FIFA demands tax exemptions from hosts, and in the bidding process for 2026, President Trump granted FIFA full exemptions on all this revenue. Of course Trump being Trump, he could reverse this decision at any moment.

2/ Men's World Cups are very expensive for host governments, which spend billions, and very lucrative for FIFA, which makes billions. See the basic business model below (courtesy of @sdwolfe.bsky.social, Martin Müller and David Gogishvili). The USA will pay for the party and suffer the hangover.
