ha it's not just you. we count 18 gigs in Manchester that night. Primal Scream at New Century, Devlin at Gorilla, Bright Phoebus at Stoller Hall, an album launch at the Bread Shed. first Saturday after festival season and everyone piled in

Recording is the part that usually gets skipped in grassroots funding. It isn't hard to get a gig, it's hard to come away with something you can send a promoter afterwards. That's the gap this closes.

Between Gards, the Roadhouse and this you're running a night most days of the week. Hull has 15 on our open mic directory when the average city has about five. That isn't the size of the place doing that, it's a handful of people doing the work.

Full backline plus an engineer is the bit people skim past, and it's the bit that decides who can actually come. Difference between a guitar in a gig bag on the bus and hauling a combo across Leeds on a Thursday.

Planning is usually what finishes these rooms off, not ticket sales. A block of flats goes up next door and the complaints do the rest. Good to see one go the other way. Studios and a terrace matter too: it means the place isn't living or dying on the door take alone.

You do not get a petition that size unless the rooms themselves are hurting, and the pubs and bars signing it are the backbone of grassroots live music. gigxchange.app/press

This week's news, as reported by Stand Out Magazine, that the LIVE Trust has announced ticket-levy funding for grassroots live music lands where it counts, which is the small rooms. gigxchange.app/press

I keep a UK open mic directory, 1,249 nights across 86 cities. Twenty-seven under Liverpool and Autonomous Zone isn't one of them. Looks like first Friday from your August and September dates - if that's right I'll add it. Costs nothing and needs nothing from you.

No bother. Small update since I wrote that: the Monday gap has gone. Drummonds now runs a first-Monday open mic, 9pm till midnight, sound engineer and gear provided. It was the only night of the week Aberdeen had nothing on.

I keep a UK open mic directory, 1,243 nights across 86 towns and cities. Leeds is well covered on it but yours isn't on there. Want me to add it? First Thursday, 7 to 9, at Pride Place. Costs nothing and needs nothing from you.

Measured in pints, the country rearranges itself. Sheffield tops it on 108, Leeds 107, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Newcastle and Nottingham all on 107. London finishes last on 100, in the most expensive market in the country.

Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 15/08/2026
The formula is just that: the median advertised fee divided by the ONS average price of a pint. The same trick as the Big Mac Index. A serious dataset wearing a friendly unit.
100
Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 15/08/2026
The median UK gig fee is £484. A pint is £4.83. So one gig is worth exactly 100 pints.

Good to see a band go back down the ladder rather than treating a Ritz sellout as a one way trip. Those rooms need the ticket sales a lot more than the Ritz does.

I keep a UK open mic directory, 1,243 nights across 86 towns and cities. Fifteen in Hull, but not the Mullets one. Gards, the Mad Hatter and Roadhouse are all on there. Happy to add the Thursday night too if you tell me when sign-up opens and how long the slots are.

The bit that never shows up in the numbers is what a room does for the acts passing through it. Nobody's first gig happens in an arena.

Rehearsal, recording and a label under one roof is rare - most places do one and send you elsewhere for the rest. Will keep an eye out for the Jodie Vinall release.

First one's a proper milestone, and Titanic Distillery during Fleadh week is a hell of a place to start. Most people's first is a back room with three mates and the bar staff in it.

Hull's got one of the busier open mic scenes in the country from where I'm sitting - I keep a UK directory of them, 14 active in the city. I've got the Mad Hatter and O'Rileys but not your Gardeners Arms night. The directory gets a fair bit of traffic, so let's get it added.

The Fiery Bird's a proper one. Run by a community interest company, 200 cap, and they do an open mic on the last Monday of the month, £1 in, sign up from 7. Woking's quietly better for music than it gets credit for.

The Night Owl is exactly the kind of room the Midlands can't afford to lose, and it's now asking for public support to stay open. Venues like this rarely come back once they're gone. Worth a minute of your time. #Birmingham #LiveMusic #GrassrootsMusic

That SARG blog prompted a piece of ours. Pubs are most of the venue estate for grassroots live music, and it is the part drinking data cannot see: when a room stops putting music on, the pub keeps trading, so nothing records that the music stopped. gigxchange.app/blog/uk-pubs-open-mics-midweek-2026

Did not expect a Bandcamp page when I went looking for your research. Queued for tonight. Guitarist here, so a live hall recording of pipes is well outside my usual listening.

@simon-mckerrell.bsky.social your line about friends living miles apart meeting only at musical events stopped me. We count 287 UK towns with a venue and no gig listed at all. I had not thought of those as places where people have simply stopped gathering. Cited your book in our report.

Good news, genuinely. That 100-cap room sits inside a well-funded new arrival though, and the standalone independents doing the same job are the ones still under pressure. London has around 396 of them, and most I have a capacity for are under 250.

Made a starter pack for UK grassroots live music: venues, the unions and bodies, and the writers covering it. 45 accounts, all checked as still posting. Lots of venues signed up here in 2024 and never came back. Those are left out. bsky.app/starter-pack/naumaan.gigxc…

That 80% figure matches what I see, and it's the fixable part. The repo keeps a one-screen map, generated indexes of every script and doc, and registers for the things agents hunt for. Most orienting becomes one lookup instead of a wander round the codebase.
100
Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 07/08/2026
True, and a lot of that consumption is doing real work. If you're building something rather than just after quick answers, you have to interrogate and test the agents constantly. Skimping on tokens is how you get slop.
010
Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 07/08/2026
It's all pace until you've built something valuable, then it's all harness engineering. Early on the agents flew. Now paying users sit on that database, so the week goes on deploy gates whose counters can only hold or fall, a hook that blocks destructive SQL, and features born kill-switch off.

Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 07/08/2026
Glad to see this. Every room I've played since 2009 sits somewhere downstream of the work you lot do. Good luck with the next chapter.

Why bother. Nobody publishes where UK grassroots gigs happen or what they pay. We're tracking gigs across 89 cities, and that data helping nobody in a database seemed like the waste. Answers are CC BY, cite and reuse.

Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 07/08/2026
Every figure gets pulled live at draft time, never from memory. Every answer carries its caveat in plain sight (our data under-counts unticketed pub gigs, so we say so). A wrong number handed to a journalist would be the end of us, so the checks are mechanical.

Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 07/08/2026
Behind it: 52 already-answered questions as a public archive, and a rule that nothing new sends until I've read and approved it. The ask box answers instantly from the archive; fresh questions go into a queue, where an agent drafts from live directory data and I sign off.

My website started answering journalists' questions on its own this week. There's a standing promise on the /press page now: ask any UK live-music data question, get an answer the same working day, free to use, just credit us.
The ask form on the GigXchange press page. Heading: Not answered above? Ask us directly. Fields for your question, email, name, outlet and deadline, with a note that journalists on deadline get an answer the same working day.

The consolidation didn't take long to show up again. Whitbread have confirmed all 106 Beefeaters close 10 September, sites becoming Premier Inn rooms or sold. Even the food-led estates are consolidating into something that isn't a pub at all. Wonder if it shows in next year's employment numbers.

Singing with Tom Robinson at the last gig under the old name is some way to close a chapter. Good luck with This Future's Stupid, that's a name to grow into.

I ship with agents daily and still wouldn't call the problems a skill issue. Most of my week goes on the harness around them, gates on the way out, a reviewer paid to refute. The raw output without that would eat me alive.
000
Naumaan Zahid @naumaan.gigxchange.app · 06/08/2026
Same pattern in the UK. I run a directory of open mic nights and of 1,100+ listed, around 650 we checked had quietly stopped, venue often still trading. The music goes before the building does. Sorry about that list.

The Pipeline is a 60-cap room. That's the size where basically everyone starts, and the size with the least protection when the lease turns. Ten venues now community-owned. Good to see.

Enjoyed this one. I've credited it in a piece on Aberdeen's venues, since it's what made me go and count ours. 19 open mic nights in the city and not one on a Monday, which I wasn't expecting. gigxchange.app/blog/aberdeen-music-venues-open-mics-2026

Hadn't clocked the employment side. Consolidation's rarely a sign of good times, but maybe once an industry is forced through it, it can grow again.
