I am in Brest for the European Conference on Restoration Ecology #SERE2026 to present our new paper "Drivers of invertebrate community assembly during ecosystem restoration"! Friday 11:45 in Amphi F. If you or anyone you know is around - give me a shout! :) @restorationecology.bsky.social

We propose that predator-mediated coexistence plays an under-appreciated role during ecosystem restoration, with vegetation complexity acting as the mechanism through which habitats mediate interactions. Read to find out our recommendations! doi.org/10.1111/rec....

Looking for a furnished room/flat near Kingussie, or Aviemore for 3 months (May-July). I'm starting a work placement at the Highland Wildlife Park, helping with their invertebrate reintroduction programme! Happy to discuss details. Please drop me a message if you know anything, or share this post 🙏

A macro photo of a willow weevil. The weevil is excavating a sawfly gal on a leaf, where it will eventually lay an egg. The leaf is bright green and covered in fine, rough hairs. The weevil is black with a long rostrum, buried deep into the gal.

Local harvestman discovers that having eight legs doesn't help carry the weight of perpetual misidentification by humans. #bugs #macro #Inverts #Invertebrates #opilione
An image of an Opilione (common names: Harvestman and Daddy-long-legs). It is Dicraopalpus ramosus, a distinctive harvestman with forked palps. This harvestman appears quite sad, slumped over a plant stem, looking forlornly at the camera.

Why do we insist on destroying every inch of natural habitat we have to make these horrible, sprawling suburban housing schemes like the Americans? They are environmentally disastrous and anti-pedestrian. Why aren't we thinking more like this??
011
Sam Rogerson @naturefromsam.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
The last thing we need is to strip protections for some of the most threatened species in our country. Why don't we focus on high-quality, high-density, urban flats? How about people hording multiple homes or real estate that sits unused and run-down in city centres?
140
Sam Rogerson @naturefromsam.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
This makes me so angry on so many levels. Do you know how rare Great Crested Newt breeding habitat is? Do you know what the process of protection actually entails? Regardless of what a consultant finds (newts, bats, whatever) work will ALWAYS win. We do the BARE MINIMUM to protect these animals.

Sam Rogerson @naturefromsam.bsky.social · 08/12/2024
Fuck. Off. This is a Tory talking point picked up by the so-called "left" Labour. As a former consultant, here's what you need to do: streamline your shit application process for licenses. NatureScot has already managed this - why not Natural England?? news.sky.com/story/angela...

Angela Rayner says newts can't be more protected than people who need housing
Wildlife from newts to bats have held up planning decisions over the years, and the Labour government has said enough is enough as it seeks to get Britain building over the course of this parliament.
