I've been wondering, what if we think about LLMs as a solution rather than a problem? like, there are problems with LLMs, but consumers are paying for them because they genuinely solve problems. Maybe it's better to focus on the problems they're solving? The kinds of problems I'm thinking about […]

I logged in to LinkedIn to see a page full of people praising DHH, got mad, and wrote this. Less than 12 hours later I got an email telling me "Your post doesn’t comply with our Professional Community Policies on bullying and harassment. It’s been removed […] [Original post on mastodon.social]
A LinkedIn post from me that reads "DHH is openly a Nazi. You should not promote anything he is doing or relay his opinions on software development. It is shocking to me when I open this app and see people casually discussing his opinions on AI or interface design or whatever, as if he were a "thought leader". He is an open advocate for mass murder. It doesn't matter what else he thinks, do not promote his ideas." followed by the text "Only you can see this post because this content goes against our Professional Community Policies."

First, there's no such thing as a "good programmer". Programming skill is not a scalar where we all compete with each other. It's a complex multi-factor ability with a lot of nuance in how it's measured. Domain knowledge matters a lot. It's also highly situational. I have had career experiences […]

Oh, and none of this actually has anything to do Rust. It can deploy any* image that's built using streamLayeredImage. Rust is, really, one of the less dramatic cases vs "raw" streamLayeredImage.. it can be a bit of a mouthful to build, but after linking the difference between 1 or 5 layers […]

It also has a pretty neat and/or blursed zero-config file watching system á la Tup. Basically, it spins up a virtual FUSE filesystem and asks Nix to build /that/. Which then gives us a good record of all the files that Nix actually accessed! (I'm honestly still waiting for the corner case that […]

So.. Trebuchet is an experiment in "What if Tilt was a bit more NIx-brained?". The packages are still built by NIx, but it can be smart about how much work it does before negotiating with the registry, and it knows that layers that consist of the same Nix paths don't need to be rebuilt if the […]

(Tilt is pretty neat! But it's also still pretty tied into the "dockerfile world". We /can/ override most parts, but the design decisions end up feeding into each other and we're still halfway into the complicated bash script again.. And it's only really aimed at the development process.)

Hell, for local development you can't even count on the cluster and your host machine (where you're pushing from) agreeing on the name of the registry! If you're running the registry itself from Docker too then you'll usually push to localhost:12345 but pull from myregistry:5000.
