The gaps in data extend far beyond philanthropy. When Native communities are misrepresented or undercounted across health, economic, and demographic research, policy and funding decisions follow suit. Accurate data is not optional, it’s foundational to equity.

What isn’t measured often isn’t prioritized. Without accurate tracking of investments to Native organizations and Tribal nations, inequities remain hidden and unaddressed. Transparent data is essential to building trust and directing resources where they belong.

Philanthropy must reckon with its history in order to transform its future. True equity requires acknowledging how wealth was built and committing to redistributing resources in ways that repair harm. Justice-centered funding isn’t charity, it’s responsibility.

Research without cultural understanding can miss the mark entirely. Tribal sovereignty, citizenship, and lived realities require more than surface-level inquiry—they demand partnership and respect. Acknowledging Native expertise leads to better data and better outcomes.

Too often, Native organizations are asked to adapt to systems that were never designed for them. Equity means institutions doing the work to understand and reflect the communities they serve, not the other way around. Transformative philanthropy listens first.
