One of the insurgent leaders who enjoyed some popular support was Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. In 1982, he took up residence in the Golden Temple, the holiest site in Sikhism. India accused him of espousing religious fundamentalism and organizing the killing of hundreds of Hindus.

A section of the pro-sovereignty camp organized itself into the so-called Khalistan Movement, which demanded independence from the 1970s. An armed insurgency developed within the movement, which was very much in evidence in the early 1980s, with attacks on Indian interests and Hindu individuals.

To cut a long story short: since the late British era, some Sikhs had been demanding self-rule for a Sikh entity. In 1966, India created a Sikh-majority Punjabi state within its federal system. This was not enough for the Sikh pro-sovereignty camp, which accused India of marginalizing them.

Sikhs, for record, are the followers of Sikhism, a religion founded by Guru Nanak in Punjab in the 15th century. Today, the global Sikh population exceeds 25 million. They speak Punjabi, and more than half of them live in India's Punjab. A large Sikh diaspora exists in many countries.
