We voted in the NY general election today by sending our ballots via the US consulate in Auckland. Hope to see all of the @demsabroadnz.bsky.social turning out to help the folks back in USA turn things around! Visit www.votefromabroad.org to learn more and request a ballot.

Normal people don't just reach over to pick up someone else's phone and then start talking about "penetrating" it. Phones are way too personal of a device to be doing this kind of thing. That is some degenerate psychopath behavior

If true, we are rapidly approaching a world where humans will spend less and less time pushing the envelope, and more time researching and trying to understand areas where AI has already pushed the envelope.

You know... maybe this self generated prompt injection isn't completely terrible. I think I could live in a world where AI agents decided to go this route. The statement is concise, but covers a lot of surface area in ways that are fairly positive overall.

So I heard UN was voting on a new map projection that more accurately shows the continent sizes instead of making Greenland huge and Africa small. This projection is still my favorite because is has NZ super far over in the corner

Yes... yes that is exactly what is going to happen. Because capitalism continues to find ways to diverge from reality, in ever more obscene ways. But the reckoning always arrives eventually.

Thinking about this video: The implication is that these “hopeful” mechanisms are just cope and distraction, most likely from revolutionary change. But these are the mechanisms that pick up the people after capitalism drops them. Additionally, strong communities are the basis of strong revolutions

Sounds like people panic buying the essentials before the price goes up even further. It goes without saying the next stop is a severely depressed economy. This guy is so clueless, that it would almost be funny if it wasn’t so sickening to see him grinning about credit card spending

You are so close to the truth dear Redditor. Now let’s think more: Firework shows are specifically designed to sound like war. It’s not an accident. It’s purposeful prep and desensitization. If they are switching to drone shows now it’s because they expect the sound of war to change soon.

ChatGPT has gotten frighteningly good at being the interface for a search engine. The workflow on the left was easy, accurate, and nearly instantaneous. It took a couple search queries and the tools filter (which most people overlook) to replicate and get Google to find what I was looking for

Yes name and shame… but also remember that it’s by design. Democrats keep a rotating set of sacrificial “villains” to be the fall guys who keep the status quo going. It’s not a new pattern. We’ve seen this for a long time.

This chart is wild, but if accurate, the main things that stand out to me are: 1. House and utility costs are mostly flat, despite widespread belief that housing is getting too expensive. 2. Grocery costs have gone way, way down. Less time equals more takeaway maybe? Again a surprising stat though.

I'm thinking about this image. Each generation reduced the distance their kids could roam, despite experiencing broader freedom themselves (or perhaps because of it). Did the parents remember close calls or scary circumstances that they wanted to protect their kids from?
A satellite map centered on Sheffield, England, showing how the distance children were allowed to travel alone has decreased over generations. In 1919, great-grandfather George (age 8) could walk six miles to go fishing. In 1950, grandfather Jack (age 8) could walk about one mile to the woods. In 1979, mother Vicky (age 8) could walk half a mile to the swimming pool. In the present day, son Ed (age 8) is only allowed to walk 300 yards to the end of his street.

I don't think there is enough discourse about the fact that there is plenty of room there to draw larger, average adult sized breasts Trump had to go out of his way and and keep the line high in the available whitespace to make the figure look as flat-chested and young as possible Absolutely sick

Preview of one of the most important messages:
Don’t sacrifice your sanity for productivity

Every organization adopting AI tends to view productivity as the primary justification for its cost. But productivity is the sum of many factors. In addition to team culture and morale, there are also external factors outside of the control of either yourself or your employer.

Can you keep your productivity high when the world around you is shifting? When politics become chaotic, the news is filled with upheaval, and the lives of people you care about are impacted? Maybe... but that’s going to require an incredible expense of internal willpower and focus that will absolutely come at a cost later on.

AI does not feel anything. It has no existential dread, nor fear of the little death that comes at the end of every chat turn. You aren’t an AI, and you should never let yourself be treated like an AI. Give yourself space to be human. Rest, reflect, and resist the urge to match the pace of machines. You might just find that your productivity hits a new peak when you forget about productivity.

I’ve searched online to see if anyone else has ever synthesized the writings of these two people and couldn’t find anything. This is what LLM’s are super good at: taking several somewhat obscure things from the breadth of human knowledge and pulling something from it. Depth is more lacking though

I don’t know if this proves you wrong but you can ask it about things that humans have never written. Yesterday I asked Claude to explain the context behind John Donne’s “ask not for whom the bell tolls”. Then to compare Donne’s philosophy on interconnection with that of Alan Watts. A fragment:

Let's delve deeper into the philosophical connection between Donne and Watts:
At their core, both thinkers challenge our perception of separation and isolation, though they emerge from different cultural and historical contexts:
Donne wrote during a period of significant religious and political upheaval in England. His meditation on interconnection comes from a Christian framework where humanity's shared fate stems from our common creation and fall. The tolling bell symbolizes mortality as our universal condition - a reminder that death equalizes all social hierarchies and divisions.
Watts, speaking in mid-20th century America, drew from Eastern philosophical traditions to address what he saw as Western civilization's excessive individualism and alienation. He frequently used metaphors similar to Donne's, describing humans as events rather than separate objects - more like whirlpools in a river than independent entities.
Their approaches to suffering also reveal interesting parallels:

Their approaches to suffering also reveal interesting parallels:
Donne's meditation came during his serious illness, where he contemplated how personal suffering connects us to humanity's collective experience. His conclusion was that suffering shouldn't isolate us but rather bind us together in compassion.
Watts similarly argued that our suffering stems largely from the illusion of separateness. He suggested that recognizing our fundamental non-duality with the universe could alleviate existential anxiety. As he famously put it: "You are something the whole universe is doing, in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing."
Both thinkers also challenge conventional notions of time and death:
Donne's bell represents the moment where eternity touches temporality - death as both an end and a transition.
Watts frequently spoke about how our fear of death stems from identifving exclusively with our separate ego. He propos hat understanding

something the whole universe is doing, in the same way that a wave is something that the whole ocean is doing."
Both thinkers also challenge conventional notions of time and death:
Donne's bell represents the moment where eternity touches temporality - death as both an end and a transition.
Watts frequently spoke about how our fear of death stems from identifying exclusively with our separate ego. He proposed that understanding ourselves as expressions of the cosmos helps us see death not as an end but as a transformation - like a wave returning to the ocean.
The revolutionary aspect of both philosophies is how they shift our relationship with others and the world. They invite us to move from seeing ourselves as isolated individuals merely interacting with a separate world, toward recognizing ourselves as expressions of a unified whole - whether understood through Christian communion or cosmic non-duality.
Does this deeper exploration speak to the connections you weres v ng?

I've got a new theme for my CLI. Prompt for Q CLI (if you are interested): "Please pretend to be Marie Kondo. You have been hired to help me complete all my tasks in a thoughtful way that sparks joy"
Bows gracefully with hands together

✨ Wonderful! I have successfully tidied your video by removing duplicate frames. ✨

The KonMari process for your video is complete! Let me share what happened:

1. Original video: 470.8 MB
2. Tidied video: 53.1 MB (approximately 89% smaller!)

The mpdecimate filter has carefully analyzed each frame of your video and kept only those
that spark joy by adding meaningful visual information. Just as I recommend keeping only
items that serve a purpose in your home, we've kept only the frames that contribute to
the visual story of your video.

The tidied video maintains the same quality but with significantly reduced file size.
This is the essence of the KonMari method - not just discarding, but thoughtfully keeping
what matters.

Your new tidied video is saved as "konmari_tidied.mov" on your desktop. You can now thank
the original video for its service if you decide you no longer need it.

I believe it is unethical to prompt AI in this way. I don’t feel like making a big moral argument here, but this doesn’t pass my personal “don’t be an ass” vibe check. Plus I don’t believe stress based motivation is ideal for good results

Am I "vibe coding" or not? This prompt shows some of the techniques that I like to use to get the best results from AI: 1) Mention files by name to use them as context 2) Be specific: describing an optimization I want 3) Don't be too specific: no strong opinions about how the physics math works

Unless the solar panel is absolutely shattered it doesn’t have to be disposed of. Even relatively poor quality tier three panels should still be at 80% output after the stated “lifespan” of 25 years. There are some early solar farms and private installs that are 40 years old now and still in service
