An issue in my AI review pipeline said: "Do not attempt this as a patch series." Ten days later, I shipped six patches against it in 32 hours. The fix that mattered was a decision: what missing review evidence permits. A refusal plus a "completed" status no longer clears a commit.

Silence Is Not an Approval | Nathan Payne

I built a bingo app for a 9-night cruise: 845 squares, 61 bingos. Two weeks later, the same code ran a weekend for another host: 27 squares, no bingos. The code traveled. The product—prompts, a dinner ritual, a host tuning it live—didn't. A second customer shows which parts of a v1 were product.

The Code Wasn’t the Product | Nathan Payne
Same code, second event, different host: 845 marks became 27. The platform generalized; the product—occasion-fit prompts, a group that talked about it at dinner, a host tuning it live—did not.

Ten PRs. 41 review rounds. 116 findings, none rejected as wrong. A perfect record—and 94 seconds after the last merge, a fresh reviewer found the bug every pass had missed. The record measured closure, not coverage. nathanpayne.com/blog/perfect...

A Perfect Review Score, One Escaped Bug | Nathan Payne
An AI review batch recorded 122 finding dispositions with zero rejections and still shipped a P1. Correlated verification keeps shared blind spots.

I learned a new word! "Mojibake (Japanese: 文字化け) is the garbled, unreadable text that appears when computer software decodes and displays text using a different character encoding (e.g., UTF-8 vs. Windows-1252) than the one it was originally saved in."

@caseynewton.bsky.social I loved your Platformer Live show on YouTube. One small piece of feedback: it would be helpful if sponsored segments were labeled a bit more clearly, so viewers can immediately understand when a segment is paid for and what incentives may be shaping it. See attached idea.

I asked AI to critique my Mondrian-inspired projects page. It found two different blues. Both were defensible. Together, they were wrong. A small design lesson about provenance, coherence, and trusting the rendered object over the backstory. nathanpayne.com/blog/two-blu...

You know you've been reading about technology too much when you have to reread a headline to realize they aren't talking about frontier models or AI agents. 🤓

Let AI agents take six shots at a trivial formatting bug. None fixed it—because the bug wasn't in the code, it was in the pipeline. The agents kept patching individual layers instead of looking at the system as a whole. Failure taxonomy: nathanpayne.com/blog/six-prs-one-bug-agent-failure-modes/

Six PRs, One Bug: What AI Agents Actually Get Wrong | Nathan Payne
A billing email bug took six AI-authored PRs to diagnose—not because the agent couldn't write code, but because it never promoted a repeated local failure into a structural question. The full session ...

Same prompt, same inspiration images, three different AI models — and three completely different vibes. Grok went photorealistic and bleak. Gemini 3 Flash Image gave us an actual comic strip with a narrative arc. DALL·E delivered beautiful illustrations and the word "scooret."

Learned a new word: idempotency. An operation is idempotent if applying it more than once produces the same result as applying it once. Setting a light switch to "on" → idempotent. Toggling it → not. Turns out there's a word for that!

How are people using Bluesky and Threads and X? Do you post the same thing everywhere? Do you split it by platform? This is exhausting.

A bittersweet story of a boy just crossing into manhood who stumbles upon exactly what he'd been looking for—that rare, perfect moment of finding. And then it passes. Just the once. Life carries on after that, quieter and more ordinary, the way it tends to do. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pillion...
