Wow, cool, I've wanted something like this for years and years. I love SuperCollider but really wanted visualisation and easy controls; I love DAWs but sometimes really just want to write code in there.

Now the outside company responsible for these courses wants us to make up our own minds about whether people deserve the protections they have under law, presenting its own training course as some kind of debate. It's obvious where this ends.

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
This is dangerous and wrong. When I did the course a year ago the intro just emphasised its importance. I was proud of my country and my employer's commitment to these principles and felt I would be protected if I wanted to be myself as a nonbinary person, despite the rising wave of transphobia

You still have the other projection, even if it's just a monoidal category, without symmetry: A⊗B ≅ (1⊗A)⊗B −π₁⊗B→ 1⊗ B≅ B. (In both cases it's then cartesian by Cox's theorem.)
011
Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
If I understand correctly, this implies that you have the other projection as well, namely A⊗B −swap→ B⊗A −π₁→ B, and it's also natural because π₁ and swap are.

Done, but the default text has some paragraphs that shouldn't really be there IMHO, about how using Palantir is bad because it would be better to use a variety of different companies instead. I would say it's bad because letting private companies get their hands on medical data is bad, full stop.

One way to do it would be to fix the positions of the particles at the two times and then (locally) minimise the action to get a set of physically valid trajectories. Maybe you did it that way and the asymmetry is an artefact of the initial path you chose for the optimisation?

Is the time-asymmetry of the entropy curve a clue to how it's done? It seems to decrease slower than it increases.

This petition was rejected. I'm extremely puzzled by the idea that the government is not responsible for whether the government posts on x dot com or not.
email reply from no-reply@partition.parliament.uk:

Sorry, we can’t accept your petition – “Stop using X.com for all official purposes”.

It calls for action relating to a particular individual, or organisation that the UK Government or Parliament is not responsible for – except where the organisation’s role or powers are set out in law, and the petition is to amend that law.

We can't accept petitions which call for actions with regard to named businesses.

We only reject petitions that don’t meet the petition standards:

Local Woman Just Thinks Flaming Forest Could Find More Peaceful Way to Protest Climate Change. theneedling.com/2026/07/02/l...

The link to support the petition is petition.parliament.uk/petitions/77... Once 5 people have signed it they will check it obeys the rules (which might take a few weeks), and then it will go live. A maximum of 20 people can sign it at this stage, so if you can't sign it it means we're on track.

Ok, looks like I have 5! I'll get this going this week. The way it works is, 5 people have to support it, then it hopefully gets approved, and after that anyone can sign it - so it might be a while before it becomes a live petition.

So we've no official way to tell where these threats are coming from. But if they're something serious enough to actually prevent journalists from writing what they want to write, I strongly suspect they come from the well funded GC groups, not from trans people or their supporters.

The report: www.gov.uk/government/p.... The word "trans" is mentioned in only one paragraph, and the only thing it really says is "Other journalists noted concerns with covering trans issues due to polarisation surrounding the topic, which has led journalists to receive death threats and hostility"

I was initially frustrated with the Guardian for not making it clear whether the threats over "trans issues" are from supporters of trans rights or "gender critical" people. (I assume it's the latter.) But I checked the government report and it does the exact same thing!

It's not even by a small amount!
Wikipedia's aggregated graph of voter intention polls from July 2024 to present, from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opinion_polling_for_the_next_United_Kingdom_general_election

It shows the green vote share increasing rapidly from about 9% to over 15% in Apr 2026, but then dropping precipitously from May 2026 onwards, currently at about 12% and trending sharply downwards.

I was surprised to find there isn't an official petition.parliament.uk petition asking the UK government to stop using X dot com. Do I know 5 people who would support a petition along the lines of the image? You don't need any qualification other than being a UK citizen.
Petition title: Stop using X.com for all official purposes

What you want the UK Government or Parliament to do: Recognise the danger that X.com presents to Britain, in terms of the influence of a foreign actor and lack of political neutrality, and immediately cease using it for all official and promotional purposes by government and individual MPs.

More information about your petition: Since its purchase in 2022, X (formally Twitter) cannot be seen as politically neutral. Its algorithm actively promotes the personal views of its owner, and entire sections of British society have stopped using it due to the overwhelming prevalence of extreme right-wing ideology on the platform. Yet X is still used as the primary social media outlet for outreach and promotion by the government and many of its MPs, leading to an extreme bias in who the government communicates with.

Does anyone reading this have a working Amiga emulator set up? I want to remind myself what the Workbench fonts looked like (Topaz, Diamond, Emerald, Garnet, Opal, Ruby, Sapphire), but it seems like no images of them exist anywhere online.

Thank you so much for this. It's really a huge relief to know there's a party with substantial representation in Parliament who sees how wrong this is and is willing to say so without qualifying it. I really wish you luck in fighting this.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. It is wonderful to know there is a major party in Parliament who sees how wrong this is and is willing to say so publicly without qualifying it or trying to appease both sides. This has changed my attitude to the Liberal Democrats quite substantially.

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 26/05/2026
This didn't work in Japan because of the humidity, but here in the UK it's surprisingly effective. Air cooling by evaporation.
A box fan stands in front of an open window. In front of it is a bowl of water, into which is dipped a wet towel, which is suspended in front of the fan by hanging it on a ruler, which is held in place by a precariously balanced book acting as a counterweight. The fan blows air past the towel, evaporating the water that it wicks up from the bowl. The cooling can be boosted every now and then by pouring a little water over the towel to wet the top part.

Apropos of nothing, Japan has stricter privacy laws than the UK's implementation of the GDPR, which means sites can't offer the "pay us or accept tracking cookies" choice if your IP address is located in Japan. (You may have to delete browser data first.) For certain web sites this will persist.

Basically they said nothing until it was way too late, and whenever they do say anything they always do the "both sides" thing. As a supposedly left-leaning paper they should be informing people about this, but they're just not.

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
I spoke to my Mum about this a few weeks ago, and she literally had no idea any of this was happening. She was pretty horrified by it. I think there's a huge problem where people who would be up in arms about this don't know about it, because they read the Guardian and the Guardian is complicit.

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
All of this is very well documented and easily backed up by direct quotes. You can read the document in question yourself (the "EHRC guidance") to see how utterly insane it is in the way it tries to twist anti-discrimination law to mean "you must discriminate".
120
Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
* this does not have broad public support * it's being done without any democratic process, using courts and quangos to reinterpret existing anti-discrimination legislation to mean the opposite of what it says * no trans people have been involved or consulted at any point on any of it
120
Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 25/05/2026
If you're in the UK you should read this, even if you don't think you know anyone affected. It buries the lead a bit tho: * the UK is mandating discrimination agains trans people, including what amounts to a toilet ban * this is a deliberate action by the Labour government 1/3

Probably the end goal is to change the law to make it enforceable. I really hope it doesn't work.

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
(Which is not to say the government aren't also ideologically hard right on social issues, which they clearly are.)

Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
There is probably an element of trying to split the right wing vote. The more they legitimise Reform the more the Tories lose votes, so Labour can benefit from it even if it also drives Labour voters away to the Greens. So big up Reform, fight the Greens, keep power at the cost of moral bankruptcy.
101
Nathaniel Virgo @nathanielvirgo.bsky.social · 21/05/2026
I wonder if that was the strategy - legitimise Reform, split the right wing vote, remain in power by being "the only choice" for anyone anywhere to the left of that. I'm glad it didn't work.
