With the current leading cause of aircraft loss being murder/suicide it might be time to reconsider cabin access methods in the event of murderous pilot. After the Germanwings incident the mitigation was eventually deemed too ??? to accomplish.

The thing about phones and short form video is that I hypothesize that the relentlessly positive media strategy Mamdani is using could be an antidote to this.

I just read Julia Donaldson’s new Gruffalo Granny to my kids for the first time. It’s a melancholy book for a parent who has read dozens of Donaldson stories to his kids. A public retirement note as the granny of stories, dedicated to her recently departed husband.

Not that I have a vote, but I would’ve ranked Lander first. However, if I knew this was the outcome I was going to get, I would have put him second.

Oh, I’m not underestimating it. I am super thrilled. The cross endorsement that sent Lander to Washington and Mamdani to Gracie was the best possible outcome. Him in the house with an AOC president will be awesome.

I much prefer Rust to Go, personally, but I also believe that the TypeScript team made an easily defensible language decision for their product. And I’m still of the opinion that Rust, Go, and Java are the only languages that should get a seat at the table for non-self-hosted tooling.
130
Nathan Hammond 張拿敦 @nathanhammond.com · 21/09/2026
And “self-hosted” is how you get that initial momentum and grow the community. We literally have a word for this now because of Node: Holowaychu(c)king. Amusingly he did it twice, the second time in the Go ecosystem.

Nathan Hammond 張拿敦 @nathanhammond.com · 21/09/2026
Because we don’t have time travel. Go 1.0 was in 2012. Rust 1.0 was in 2015. So unless you were going to choose Java (which Google did and everybody else balked at) it’s hard to justify using any other compiled or non-self-hosted language—especially with Go/Rust on the horizon.

“This highly competitive selective entry school has the best test scores in the area* and the teachers can’t teach for shit” is a story as old as time in Hong Kong. WAR for an average teacher at a “top school in Hong Kong” is probably negative. *only a hand-chosen 25% get to take the test.

This, and the full ban on alternative smoking products, is good policy. Especially since we actually have a public health system to protect. With greater immigration from areas with higher smoking rates we need to stay ahead of this.

Hong Kong classifies tourism as one of our "Four Key Industries" while it's percentage share of value added in GDP (in 2024) was 2.8% and percentage share of employment in total employment was 4.3%. I feel like we over-emphasize tourism in our policy decisions. www.censtatd.gov.hk/en/scode80.h...

Funny to be using English to search for a flash card manufacturer and getting “printed in the USA!” presented as a benefit. Personally I would love to have a factory in Guangdong doing the printing: I can get the shipment the day after it comes off the printer and the border is free.

In general this should just be a math problem: value vs. total cost of ownership. (Including opportunity cost!) Of course innumeracy is tremendously common.

"When the first Europeans landed on Easter Island in 1722, the moai were still there, but the trees were gone." Above quoted question text does not appear in the passage because they introduce "Easter Island" in the question, after using "Rapa Nui" in the passage.

PISA shit questions. "In the book, the author describes several civilizations that collapsed because of the choices they made and their impact on the environment." Hypothesis presented by original author, presumably research-based, but unsupported here. Laundered into "Fact" by the book reviewer.

More seriously, somebody should make an automated flash card printer/finisher with very few variables, extremely accurate, with extremely low operating cost. I’m getting low quality materials from my kids’ school, part because the degree of customization is too high.

And non-OWP migration being only net positive six years since 1997 is wild. (Two of which are top talent pass and industry scheme years.) One-way Permit migration really helping us out here.

It is also not clear that Hong Kong offers significant opportunity differential as compared to other tier one Chinese cities like Beijing or Shanghai.

Looking at these charts it’s hard to make an argument for Hong Kong’s future population growth without significant intervention. - deaths will outpace births for the foreseeable future. - migration via industry schemes and Top Talent Pass have saturated.

And, before that, they tore down a complex that was wholly unoccupied except for my neighbors because Henderson Lands could not acquire the last few units of the complex in order to build Baker Circle. Eventually, they gave up and built around it. That’s when some moved to the bridge.

That being said, the “ethical football league” with gifted athletes playing a sport they’ve never played before starting at age 24 would be absolute cinema.

If it were only the professionalized bit I could make somewhat of an argument for its continued existence. But people do not become athletes starting from zero at age 24 as compensated, well-informed adults.
